Budgets and package decisions for Indonesia
You are comparing quotes late at night and every package seems to count the trip differently.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Budget confusion starts with a quote that hides what it counts. This page sorts the questions Malaysians ask before paying a deposit and sends each one to the guide that answers it. Read it once, then use the links in the order that matches your worry.
Where should you start with a package quote?
Start with the price basis, because it changes everything after it. A figure per person, per room or per vehicle describes a different trip each time. Our guide on how to read “from RM” package prices shows what a headline figure leaves out.
Next, check what is inside the price. The guide to what Indonesia packages leave out lists the rows that can sit outside a quote, so you can ask about each one.
Which guide answers which budget question?
The table matches a worry to a page. Pick the row that sounds like you.

| What does a Bali package really cover? | Bali package price: what is included |
| Is a private driver cheaper than a package? | Private driver or organised package |
| What does a driver quote contain? | Private Bali driver inclusions |
| Do flights sit inside the price? | Air-inclusive or land-only |
| How does a larger group share cost? | Bali group of six, cost per person |
| What does Lake Toba add up to? | A realistic Lake Toba budget |
| What are the Bali levy and entry fees? | Levy and entry fees in your total |
Which costs sit outside the package price?
Four groups of costs tend to sit outside a quote: flights, entry tickets, the destination levy and personal spending such as tips, shopping and extra meals. Bali, for example, asks international visitors to pay a levy of IDR 150,000 on its official portal [1]. Some agencies include it, and others leave it for you to pay.
A short written list of “included” and “excluded” rows removes most surprises. Ask the agency to send that list with the quote, and keep it with your booking confirmation.
How do you compare two quotes fairly?
Put both quotes into the same grid before you look at the total. Use the same dates, the same party and the same hotel standard. Then mark each row as included, excluded or unpriced.
The package inclusion comparator is built for this step. For a rough view of the cost structure in ringgit, try the trip cost calculator with your party size.
What helps when the group is large or the plans are flexible?
Groups share the vehicle and driver cost, so the per-person figure shifts with the head count. Flexible travellers sometimes prefer a driver by the day over a fixed itinerary. Both choices are covered in the guides linked above.
Ahead of your enquiry, write down your dates, the number of adults and children, and the hotel standard you want. These three details speed up every quote.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you already hold two or three quotes and cannot tell them apart, send them over with your dates and party. We will give them a second look before you pay a deposit.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.Is the agency licensed?
A licensed Malaysian tour operator holds a tourism licence issued by MOTAC, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. Ask for the licence number in writing and check it before paying. The MOTAC licence glossary entry explains what to look for.
We are an independent guide. With your consent, we pass your brief to a licensed Malaysian agency for a quote, and the referral is disclosed in our footer.
How do season and exchange rates change a quote?
Dates move the figure. Malaysian school holidays and festive weeks fall in busier periods, and agencies may add surcharges or blackout dates. If your leave is fixed, ask for a quote on those exact dates instead of comparing headline prices.
Currency matters too. A quote may be set in ringgit or in rupiah, and the agency may hold the rate for a limited time. Ask which currency applies, and until when the figure stands.
What should you decide before asking for quotes?
Three decisions shape every quote: where you will base yourself, the number of days you can spare, and whether you want a driver by the day or a fixed itinerary. Settle these with your group first, because a quote built on a guess has to be rebuilt.
Write down who is travelling, including the youngest and the oldest, and note any halal needs. Muslim travellers should ask the agency for a meal-by-meal list and look for the BPJPH halal logo, the Indonesian halal agency’s label, when eating out.
What helps when the numbers still feel unclear?
Keep a single page with your dates, party size and hotel standard, and use it for every enquiry. When each agency answers the same brief, the differences between quotes become easy to see.
If two quotes still look far apart, ask each agency to explain the three biggest rows in plain words. The explanation shows whether the gap comes from the hotel, the driver or something left outside the price.
Which questions help most at the first reply?
Ask the agency to confirm the price basis, the dates the figure covers and the list of excluded rows in the first message. A clear answer on those three points shows how carefully the quote was built.
What happens after you choose?
Ask the agency to confirm inclusions, exclusions, the currency of the quote and the cancellation terms in writing. Keep the levy voucher, the booking confirmations and the driver’s contact on your phone. A calm first afternoon after landing suits children and grandparents best.

Questions Malaysians ask
Why do two Bali quotes for the same dates look so different?
The components differ. One quote may count a vehicle for a full day while another counts a few hours, or one may include entry tickets while the other leaves them out. Line the quotes up row by row before you compare the totals.
What should I read first on a package quote?
Read the price basis first: per person, per room or per vehicle. Then read the inclusions and exclusions, then the dates and cancellation terms. The headline figure only makes sense once those three are clear.
Do I need a calculator before asking for a quote?
It helps. The trip cost calculator shows the cost structure in ringgit for your party size, so you know which rows to ask about. It gives a planning view, and the agency confirms the final figures.
How do I know the agency is licensed?
Malaysian tour operators hold a licence from the tourism ministry, MOTAC. Ask for the licence number and check it with the ministry. Our glossary entry explains where to look.
Can IndonesiaQuest give me a price?
We publish no fixed prices because they depend on dates, party and season. With your consent we pass your brief to a licensed Malaysian agency, which prepares the quote.
