Peak-season surcharges and blackout dates

Your leave lands in a school holiday and the quote suddenly has a line you did not expect.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A peak-season surcharge is an extra charge for dates when demand is high. A blackout date is a day when a promotion or rate is not available. Both can change a quote after you have fallen in love with the headline price.

This checklist helps you test your dates against both before you pay a deposit. It is part of our budgets and package decisions hub.

Where do surcharges and blackouts show up?

Quote line What can happen Ask
Hotel or villa A higher nightly rate in busy weeks, or a minimum stay Which dates carry a higher rate?
Private driver and vehicle A supplement on public holidays or festival days Is there a holiday supplement?
Boat transfers and tours Fewer seats or higher fares in busy weeks Are tickets held for my dates?
Promotional package rate Not valid on blackout dates Which dates are excluded from the offer?
Flights from Malaysia Fares rise around school holidays Is the flight included, and is the fare fixed?

A headline price labelled “from” is built on a quiet date. Read how to read “from RM” package prices before you rely on it.

How do you check your own dates?

Work through these steps before you commit:

  1. Write your exact check-in and check-out dates.
  2. Mark any Malaysian school holiday, long weekend or festive period inside them.
  3. Mark any Indonesian public holiday or festival inside them.
  4. Ask the agency to confirm whether any date falls in a surcharge or blackout period.
  5. Ask for the answer as a written list of dates.

For the Bali side, check our glossary on Nyepi, the day of silence, because the island pauses and services change.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If your leave is fixed, send us your dates and party. We can help you spot surcharge risk and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What should you ask the agency?

Put these questions to the agency in writing:

  • Which dates in my trip carry a surcharge, and how much for each line?
  • Which dates are blackouts for the package rate?
  • Is the surcharge included in the total, or added later?
  • Can I move my dates by a few days to avoid it?
  • Is the price held until my deposit date?

A clear quote shows the surcharge as its own line, so you can see what you are paying for.

Will moving dates really help?

Sometimes. Shifting by a few days can take you out of a surcharge period, though flights from Malaysia and school holiday demand do not always move in the same way.

If your leave is fixed, ask the agency where the surcharge sits in your quote and whether another room type, a different base or a shorter stay lowers the extra. You can also check what packages leave out to see which costs sit outside the quote.

What do you do before paying?

Write down the total with the surcharge included, the cancellation terms and the date the price holds. The hidden costs checklist for Bali is a good final read before you transfer a deposit.

Ask the agency for two or three date options, then compare the totals side by side in the package inclusion comparator.

Questions Malaysians ask

What is a peak-season surcharge?

It is an extra charge for travel dates when demand is high, such as school holidays, long weekends and festive periods. It can appear on the hotel, the transport or the whole package. Ask for it to be shown as its own line.

What is a blackout date?

A blackout date is a day when a promotion, a package rate or a particular service is not available. The package may still sell, but at a different price or without that offer. Ask for the full list of dates in writing.

Do Malaysian school holidays count as peak season?

They can overlap with busy periods in Indonesia, because Malaysian families travel at the same time. Ask whether your exact dates fall in a surcharge period, and compare a few dates a week apart.

Can I avoid the surcharge by moving my dates?

Sometimes a small shift of a few days moves you out of a surcharge period. Ask the agency to quote two or three date options, and check whether flights from Malaysia move in price too.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
