Free and easy (FIT) travel explained

You like the freedom of planning your own days but are unsure how much to book in advance.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Free and easy is the everyday name for travelling without a fixed group tour. The industry term is FIT, short for free or flexible independent traveller: someone who plans and books flights, accommodation, transfers and activities separately instead of buying a prepackaged tour [1]. You set the pace, and you carry the planning.

For a closer look at what packages cover, start with the budgets and package decisions hub. The package versus DIY cost structure for Bali puts the two side by side.

What does free and easy include?

It means you book the pieces yourself: flights, a room, rides and tickets. You choose what to see and when to stop. In the travel trade, FIT can also describe people who book through an agent but travel outside a group [2].

Because the label is loose, ask any seller what a free-and-easy price includes. A flight-plus-hotel offer is not the same as a fully self-planned trip.

When does free and easy suit Indonesia?

It suits confident travellers who stay in one compact area and use ride-hailing for short hops. A couple in Ubud or Yogyakarta, or a Johor family on a short Batam or Bintan break, can manage much of it themselves.

Road days are different. Long drives, boat transfers and temple schedules need timing that a driver handles well. The private driver versus Grab comparison shows the trade-off.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are deciding between planning everything yourself and asking an agency to handle the hard days, send us your dates and party. We can give the plan a second look and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What do you carry yourself?

You carry the research, the payment and the problem-solving. That includes cash and card planning, covered in our cards, QRIS and ATMs guide, and the cost lines you may not see until the bill arrives. If a supplier changes plans, you handle it directly.

With an agency, the booking responsibility sits with a licensed company you can check, as the MOTAC licence entry explains.

Is a hybrid a sensible choice?

The practical answer is a blend. Book the hard days, such as airport transfers, long road days and boat crossings, with a driver or agency, and leave the walking days open for your own taste. Send us your outline and we will show where the hybrid lines fall.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is free and easy the same as FIT?

In everyday use, yes: both mean travelling without a fixed group tour, with the freedom to set your own pace. FIT stands for free or flexible independent traveller. Travel sellers use the label loosely, so ask what the price includes before you assume it matches your idea.

Can I use an agency and still travel free and easy?

Yes. In the travel trade, FIT can mean individuals, couples or families who book through an agent but do not travel in a group. You might ask for flights, hotels and a driver on selected days, and keep other days open. Agree exactly what is booked and what is not.

Is free and easy a good idea in Indonesia for a family?

It works for confident travellers in compact areas with good ride-hailing, and for city stays with short hops. With children, grandparents, long road days or boat transfers, a private driver or package brings help with timing and luggage. A hybrid works well: book the hard days, leave the easy days open.
