Which Indonesian destination suits three nights?
You have a long weekend, a Johor or Singapore base and no wish to spend it in transit.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
For three nights, Bintan or Batam gives you the longest time on the ground. Medan suits a food and city break, and Bali works if you accept that flights eat part of the first and last day. The right answer depends on where you start.
Our regions and destination choices hub compares longer trips if three nights feels too short.
How do the four options compare?
| Place | Transfer | Best suited to | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batam | Ferry from Johor or Singapore | Food, spa, shopping, family weekends | Weaker beaches than Bintan |
| Bintan | Ferry, then a short road transfer | Resort days, couples, families | Resort areas feel enclosed |
| Medan | Short flight, rail into town | Food and city sights | Toba is a long road away |
| Bali | Flight, with a late arrival likely | First-timers wanting variety | Three nights is tight |
Use the table to remove one or two options quickly, then compare the rest on your party.
Why are Batam and Bintan the easy picks?
Batam lies about 20 km off Singapore’s south coast, and ferries link Batam with Bintan and Johor Bahru [1]. Ferries from Singapore reach Bintan in roughly 45 minutes, and Tanjung Pinang has ferry and speedboat links to Batam, Singapore and Johor Bahru [2]. The Wikipedia timings come from Singapore departures, so confirm the Johor options with the operator.
Choose Bintan for resort days and Batam for a food and shopping weekend. Our Batam guide and Bintan guide go further.
When does Medan fit?
Kualanamu airport lies 39 km from downtown Medan and has a direct rail link to the city [3]. That keeps arrival simple.
Three nights covers the city’s food, mosque and palace, but a Lake Toba trip needs a longer window. Read the Medan guide first.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If your three nights are fixed and the transfer worries you, send us your dates, your starting point and who is travelling. We will give the route a second look and, with your consent, pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. When does Bali fit?
Bali fits when you want the island experience and can accept a tight schedule. Pick one base and one main outing a day. A late arrival means the first night is for rest only.
If your leave stretches to a week, the Bali options become much richer, and the Bali guide explains the bases.
Which should you skip the ferry for?
Travellers with young children or grandparents sometimes prefer a flight, because a ferry day adds queues and waiting. The ferry vs flight planner shows the trade-off for your party.
What should you check before booking?
Confirm entry rules on the official immigration pages before you fly or sail. Ask for ferry terminals, check-in cut-offs and halal meal lists in writing. A three-night trip leaves little room to fix mistakes.
Send us your starting point and dates, and we will point you to the option that fits.

- Medan, planned for Malaysian travellersYou land in Medan on the way to the lake and wonder whether the city deserves a night.
- Bali, planned for Malaysian travellersYou have limited leave, a family to keep happy and one island everyone keeps recommending.
- Ferry versus flight plannerThe crossing looks short on the ticket, yet the whole journey is more than the boat.
- Bandung, an editorial guide for MalaysiansYou want a cool, food-led city break in Java without a long list of sights.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is three nights enough for Bali from Malaysia?
Three nights lets you enjoy one base, such as Sanur or Seminyak, with one outing a day. It is tight if you arrive late or leave early, because two of the days are partly lost to flights. Add a night if you want a temple day and a beach day.
Which place needs the least travel time?
Batam and Bintan need the least, because a ferry replaces a flight and the stay starts soon after the terminal. Ferry timetables and terminals change, so confirm the departure point and the last return sailing before you pay for the hotel. Pick the departure terminal nearest your home before comparing hotels.
Is Medan sensible for a short break?
Medan works for food and city sights over three nights, and Kualanamu airport has a rail link into town. Lake Toba needs more time because of the long road, so treat Toba as a separate trip unless you can add days. If Toba matters most, give it its own trip with extra nights.
What should I plan around a ferry day?
Allow time for immigration queues at both ends, and keep the return sailing flexible. Carry your passport, a digital copy of the booking and cash for small costs. Ask the agency for the terminal name and check-in cut-off in writing. Screenshot the terminal address and check-in cut-off the night before.
