Hidden costs in Bali: a checklist

Your quote looks complete, and you want to catch what it leaves out before you fly.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A Bali quote can look complete and still leave out the tourist levy, entry fees, tips, service charge and a few transfers. The surest check is a written list that marks every line as included, excluded or paid on site. Our budgets and package decisions hub explains how to read quotes in general.

We give no fixed prices here, because they change with dates and group size. This page gives you the questions so you can find the gaps in ringgit yourself.

What do you pay before you leave the airport?

Bali asks international visitors to pay a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (IDR) on the official Love Bali portal, which emails a QR voucher after payment [1]. Ask whether your quote includes it, and keep the voucher on your phone. Our guide to the Love Bali levy and entry fees in your total cost shows where it sits in a budget.

Entry rules change, so check before you fly on the official immigration pages. Use only official addresses, because look-alike sites exist.

What costs does a package quote leave out?

Use this checklist and mark every line as included, excluded or unclear.

Cost line Where it hides Ask the operator
Tourist levy Outside the package Who pays and when
Entry fees Temples, waterfalls, shows Listed as included or paid on site
Parking and tolls Driver days Included or extra
Driver overtime Late returns The hourly rule
Airport transfers Late arrivals Waiting time, night rate
Meals Plans that cover breakfast only Lunches, dinners, drinks
Tips Driver, guide, villa staff What you arrange yourself
Insurance and flights Land-only prices Whether the price is land-only

Our guide on what a Bali package price actually includes checks these rows against full packages.

How do service charge and tax show up?

Restaurants and hotels in Indonesia can add a service charge and a local tax to the bill. They may not appear in the menu price, so the final figure can be higher than expected. Our glossary entry on service charge and pajak explains the terms.

Ask what the hotel or restaurant adds at checkout, and whether the quoted rate already includes it. Check the bill before you pay, and ask for an explanation of any line you do not recognise.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If your Bali quote looks complete but you suspect a line is missing, send it over. We will give the inclusions a second look and, with your consent, pass your brief to a licensed agency.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What about tips and small payments?

Tips for drivers, guides and villa staff are your choice and sit outside the base price. Decide a sensible amount before you travel and keep small notes handy. Small payments such as parking, toilets and donations at temples add up across a week.

Put a margin for these in your budget. The trip cost calculator lets you add them to the total.

What questions protect you on the day?

Put these questions to the operator, and keep the answers in writing:

  1. Which entry fees are included, and which are paid on site?
  2. What are the driver’s hours, and what does overtime cost?
  3. Are fuel, tolls and parking inside the price?
  4. Is the tourist levy included?
  5. Which meals are covered, and which are not?
  6. Who do I call if a charge appears that I did not expect?

A quote that answers all six is easy to trust. A quote that avoids one is worth a second look before you pay a deposit.

What happens after you WhatsApp us?

We read your brief, then, with your consent, pass it to a licensed Malaysian travel agency, which prepares the quote. We are an independent guide, not the agency, and the referral is disclosed in our footer.

Keep the reply for comparison, and ask the agency to confirm inclusions, exclusions and cancellation terms in writing.

Questions Malaysians ask

What costs can a Bali package quote leave out?

Look for the tourist levy, entry fees to temples and attractions, tips, restaurant service charge, meals not in the plan, travel insurance and flights. Ask the operator to mark each as included or excluded in writing before you pay.

Who pays the Bali tourist levy?

The levy applies to international visitors and is paid on the official Love Bali portal. Ask the operator whether the quote includes it, and keep the emailed voucher on your phone. Use only the official site, because look-alike pages exist.

How do I handle tips in Bali?

Tips are your choice and sit outside the base price. Decide a sensible amount for the driver, guide and hotel staff before you travel and keep small notes handy. Ask the operator whether any service is already built into the price.

How can I avoid surprise charges on the day?

Ask for a written list of what is included, what is excluded and what is paid on site. Keep a copy on your phone, and confirm entry fees, parking and overtime before each outing. A clear list prevents small payments from adding up.
