Indonesia region chooser

You have one trip's worth of leave and six regions all asking for it.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

The region chooser turns a vague wish into a short list of places that fit your group. You tell it where you depart from, who is going, how many nights you have and what matters most. It then ranks six regions: Bali, Lombok, Lake Toba, Yogyakarta, Batam and Bintan.

Use it before you ask for quotes. For the wider picture, read our decision tools and methods hub.

What does the tool do with your answers?

It works in two steps. First it applies your limits, such as departure city and trip length, because those rule some places in or out. Then it orders what remains by the priorities you pick, such as beach, culture, nature, food, a short break or shopping.

Where the tool cannot judge, it says unknown instead of guessing. A priority you leave blank stays blank.

How should you read the result?

Read the result as a shortlist, not a verdict. The scores are our editorial judgement of how well each region matches a priority. They are not measured data, and they do not know your dates, budget or the age of your children.

Look at the top two or three, then read about each. Our Bali page and Lombok page give the next layer of detail, and the first-timer overview explains the wider choice.

What assumptions sit behind the ranking?

A few rules shape the order. Departing from Johor favours Batam and Bintan, because the ferry makes them easy. Very short trips favour those two as well, while Lake Toba drops when the trip is short, because the road transfers from Medan take a large part of the day.

Longer trips lift Bali, Lombok and Yogyakarta, where variety rewards the time. Families and seniors lift the options with easier logistics. These are our rules, and your own circumstances may differ.

Planning aid only. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored or sent.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If the shortlist still leaves you torn, send us the result with your dates and who is travelling. We can give it a second look and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What should you do after the shortlist?

Check the practical side next. Put your numbers into the trip cost calculator to see the structure in ringgit. If Batam or Bintan is on the list, use the ferry versus flight planner to add up the journey.

Then ask the agency to price the same inclusions for your top two, so you compare like with like.

When does the chooser fall short?

It cannot see weather, school-holiday crowds, ferry cancellations or local events. It does not know about a volcano alert or a closure day. Always check the official sources before you pay for anything.

Entry rules also sit outside the tool. Check immigration requirements on the official pages before you fly.

What happens after you WhatsApp us?

We read your result and brief, then, with your consent, pass it to a licensed Malaysian travel agency, which prepares the quote. We are an independent guide, not the agency, and the referral is disclosed in our footer. Ask the agency to confirm inclusions, exclusions and cancellation terms in writing.

Questions Malaysians ask

How does the region chooser rank places?

It first applies your limits, such as departure city and number of nights, then scores each region against the priorities you tick. The scores are our editorial judgement, not measured data, and the result is a starting shortlist.

Why does my departure city change the result?

Johor travellers have ferry access to Batam and Bintan, which makes short breaks easier. Other departures mean a flight for every region, so the island breaks lose that advantage.

What does unknown mean in the result?

Unknown means the tool lacks the information to judge, for example a priority you left blank. Treat it as a question to answer, not a low score.

Can the tool tell me which region is best?

No. It narrows six regions to a shortlist. Season, school holidays, budget and who is travelling can all change the answer, so check them with a guide or agency.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
