How to read "from RM" package prices

A headline price looks affordable, then you wonder what the final total will really be.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A “from RM” price is the lowest figure an agency advertises, not the price of your trip. It shows what the cheapest combination of dates, room and party size costs, so your own total can differ. This guide explains what the label hides, using the budgets and package decisions hub as the wider map.

We publish no fixed prices because they depend on dates, party and season. The aim here is to help you read any from-price.

What does a from-price actually describe?

It describes one combination: a set of dates, a party size, a hotel standard and a list of inclusions. Move any of the four and the figure moves.

Point What the from-price assumes What to ask
Basis Per person, sharing a room Per person, per room or per vehicle?
Dates Low-demand weeks Does my travel week carry a surcharge?
Standard The entry-level hotel What is the room and meal plan?
Inclusions The minimum list Which rows sit outside?

Read the table as four questions to put to the agency.

Why do dates move the figure?

Prices change with the calendar. Malaysian school holidays and festive weeks fall in busier periods, and agencies may add surcharges or blackout dates. Our guide on peak-season surcharges and blackout dates explains what to look for.

If your leave is fixed, ask for a quote on those exact dates instead of comparing from-prices.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If a from-price caught your eye, send us the listing with your dates and party. We will help you turn it into a like-for-like question list and can pass your brief to a licensed agency.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What does the basis change?

A figure per person assumes a room is shared. Single travellers may pay a supplement, and groups of three may need an extra bed. A figure per vehicle describes the car, not the passengers.

The guide on per-person, per-room and per-vehicle quotes shows how each basis behaves.

Always ask the agency to state the basis in writing.

Which rows sit outside the from-price?

Flights, entry tickets, the tourist levy, tips, shopping and insurance can sit outside. Bali asks international visitors to pay a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 on the official portal [1], and some quotes leave it for you. Our list of what Indonesia packages leave out covers the rest.

How do you turn a from-price into a real total?

Send the agency your exact dates, the number of adults and children, and the hotel standard you want. Ask for a quote that names the basis and lists each row as included, excluded or unpriced.

The trip cost calculator gives a planning view in ringgit, and the agency confirms the final figures. Ask also for the MOTAC licence number, and see the MOTAC licence glossary entry for how to check.

With your consent, we can pass your brief to a licensed Malaysian agency, and the referral is disclosed in our footer.

Questions Malaysians ask

What does "from RM" mean on a package?

It is the lowest figure the agency advertises, based on certain dates, a certain party size and a certain hotel standard. Your own dates and party may cost more. Ask for a quote for your exact trip.

Why is my final quote higher than the from-price?

The from-price covers the cheapest combination, while your trip may fall in a busier week, use a better room or add items. Ask the agency which of those changed the figure.

Is the from-price per person or per room?

Check the small print. A figure per person assumes a shared room, and a single traveller may pay a supplement. Ask the agency to state the basis in writing.

Should I avoid from-prices altogether?

No, they are a useful starting point. Treat them as a signal to ask, then compare real quotes for your dates on the same basis.
