Questions to ask before paying a deposit

The quote looks right and you are one transfer away from committing.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Before paying a deposit, ask the agency to confirm in writing its licence, the full inclusions, the total price in ringgit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms. A clear agency answers each question directly. Keep every reply, because they record what was promised.

This list belongs to our booking and responsibility guide.

What should you ask about the agency itself?

Start with who you are paying. Ask for the registered company name and licence number, and search them with the steps in how to check a Malaysian travel agency licence. Ask which account the money goes to, and check that the account name matches the company.

Then ask who handles the trip on the ground. Hotels, ferries and drivers may belong to different suppliers, so ask for names.

What should you ask about price and inclusions?

Ask for a single total in ringgit and the date the price was set. Then ask for the list:

  • Hotels, room types and breakfast.
  • Transfers and ferry tickets.
  • Entrance fees and activity tickets.
  • Meals, and which are halal-certified or Muslim-friendly.
  • Driver hours, fuel, tolls and parking.
  • Anything excluded, such as flights or travel insurance.

Lay the list beside any other quote in the package inclusion comparator. The cheaper quote is not always the better one if it leaves out meals or transfers.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you hold a quote and want a second pair of eyes, paste it into WhatsApp. We can point out unclear lines and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a comparison quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What should you ask about the deposit?

Ask how much the deposit is, what it secures, when the balance is due and what happens if you cancel. For the mechanics, payment methods and deposits for packages goes through the common options.

Ask also whether the deposit is refundable, partly refundable or fixed, and under what conditions. Get the answer in writing before the transfer.

What should you ask about changes?

Travel plans move. Ask what it costs to change dates, swap a hotel or add a traveller, and who decides when a ferry or flight changes. Cancellation and reschedule questions to ask before you book covers these in more detail.

If you have not read the terms, reading package terms and conditions in plain language helps you find the clauses that matter.

What should you keep after paying?

Keep the quote, the invoice, the payment slip, the licence screenshot and the chat. Put them in one folder on your phone. If something changes, these records settle what was agreed.

Send the quote on WhatsApp if you would like a second read before you pay.

Keep the list with you during the conversation. Copy the questions into WhatsApp one at a time and mark each reply as received, so you can see what is still open.

Stay calm if the agency mentions a deadline. Ask it to write the date together with the reason, and check that it matches the terms in the quote.

If grandparents or young children are travelling, add questions about baby seats, step-free routes and rest time in the daily plan. Those answers show whether the agency has thought about your group.

Questions Malaysians ask

How much should I ask for in writing before paying a deposit?

Ask for the full itinerary, the inclusions and exclusions, the total in ringgit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms. Writing them down protects both sides and makes later questions simple to settle.

Is it reasonable to ask for the agency's licence number?

Yes. A licensed agency can share its licence number and registered name without fuss. Search the details on the official MOTAC lookup and compare them with the quote before paying.

What payment method should I use?

Use a traceable method that sends money to an account under the agency's registered company name. Ask for an invoice or receipt for every payment and keep the transfer slip.

What if the agency pressures me to pay immediately?

A fair agency explains why a date is time-sensitive and gives you room to check. If pressure replaces answers, pause and ask your questions in writing before any transfer.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
