Travel insurance for Indonesia: what to check
You are travelling with children or grandparents and want cover that fits the trip you actually planned.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Travel insurance is the one line in your budget that you hope never to use, and it is easy to buy without reading. A short check of five areas tells you whether the policy fits your family and your itinerary. Spend the time before you pay, not at a hospital counter.
This guide belongs to our budgets and package decisions hub. Entry requirements can change, so check the official Indonesian immigration pages before you fly.
What should a family policy cover?
Start with the items that carry the biggest bills when something goes wrong. Medical treatment, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation matter more than a small baggage limit.
- Medical expenses, including hospital stays.
- Emergency medical evacuation back to Malaysia.
- Trip cancellation and interruption for illness.
- Delayed or lost baggage and travel documents.
- Personal liability and, where offered, rental damage.
Read the limits and the excess for each row. A big headline figure can hide a small limit for one item.
Which activities are excluded?
This is where families get surprised. Scooter riding, diving, rafting, volcano hikes and similar activities are listed separately in the policy wording.
| Activity | What to ask the insurer |
|---|---|
| Scooter or motorbike | Is cover valid with my licence class? |
| Diving or snorkelling | Is there a depth or certification limit? |
| White-water rafting | Is it listed as covered or excluded? |
| Volcano or high-altitude hike | Is there an altitude limit? |
| Boat transfers | Are small boats and speedboats covered? |
Ask in writing and keep the reply. If a planned activity is excluded, decide whether to change the plan or buy extra cover.
How do age and health change things?
Policies set age limits and ask about pre-existing conditions. Grandparents and anyone with a long-term condition should declare it honestly when applying. A claim can be reduced or refused when a known condition was left out.
Check whether the plan covers a worsening of a stable condition, and whether emergency evacuation is included for older travellers. Our family trip planning worksheet helps you list ages and health needs before you apply.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are unsure which activities your family plan includes, send us your draft itinerary. We will list the ones to check with your insurer and, with your consent, pass your brief to a licensed agency.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.How do you compare two plans fairly?
Put both plans into the same table: medical limit, evacuation, cancellation, excess, activity exclusions and the claims route. The method is the same as comparing tour quotes, which our guide on comparing two quotes line by line explains.
A cheaper premium with a lower medical limit and more exclusions is not the same product. Compare the cover, then the price.
What do you do if you need to claim?
Keep the policy number, the insurer’s emergency line and a digital copy of the policy on your phone. Ask the hospital for itemised receipts and a medical report, and report the loss of any item to the police when the policy asks for it.
Call the insurer’s assistance line before any major treatment where you can. Then keep every receipt for the claim form.
Where does insurance sit in your package?
Tour packages can list insurance as excluded, so it becomes your own cost. See what Indonesia packages leave out and add an insurance row to your budget.

Questions Malaysians ask
Do I need travel insurance for Indonesia?
Entry rules can change, so check the official immigration pages before you fly. Apart from any rule, cover is a practical choice for a family trip, because a hospital visit, a cancelled flight or lost luggage costs more than the premium.
Does my credit card insurance cover me?
It may, but cover depends on how you paid for the trip and on the card tier. Read the policy wording for medical limits, age limits and the activities it excludes, then compare it with a standalone plan.
Are scooters and adventure activities covered?
Some policies exclude scooter riding unless you hold the right licence, and some exclude diving, rafting or volcano hikes. Ask the insurer in writing about each activity you plan, and tell your agency if cover limits your itinerary.
What should grandparents check?
Look at age limits, pre-existing condition rules and whether emergency evacuation is included. Declare long-term conditions honestly when you apply. A claim can be refused when a known condition was left out.
Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
