Ferry versus flight planner

The crossing looks short on the ticket, yet the whole journey is more than the boat.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

The planner adds up a whole journey, not just the crossing. You choose a route type, tick any special needs, then enter minutes for each leg. It gives you a door-to-door total and a list of questions to confirm.

Use it when you are choosing between a ferry and a flight, or between two ferry options. If you are still deciding where to go, try the region chooser first.

What does the planner do?

It supports three route types. These are the Johor to Batam or Bintan ferry, a flight from KL to Batam, and a flight from KL to Bali, Lombok, Medan or Yogyakarta.

Each route has its own legs. They run from home to the departure terminal, then check-in, Malaysian departure immigration and security, the ferry crossing or flight, arrival immigration with baggage, and the terminal-to-hotel transfer.

How should you read the result?

Read the total as the real length of your travel day, not as a price. A ferry may look short and still use a similar amount of time as a flight once the terminals and queues are counted.

Look at which legs take the largest share. That tells you where a better choice, such as a closer terminal, saves time. Our guide to Johor ferry terminals compares the departure options.

What assumptions sit behind the numbers?

The tool uses only the minutes you enter. It supplies no sailing times, flight times or queue lengths. Take them from your tickets and from operator advice, and recheck them near the date because schedules change.

Add a sensible buffer for check-in and immigration, especially with children or seniors. The Malaysian departure and the Indonesian arrival both take time, and busy terminals can add delays.

Questions to confirm with the operator

  • What is the latest check-in time before departure?
  • Which terminal does my service use, on both sides?
  • What happens if the service is delayed or cancelled?
  • Who meets us on arrival and where?
  • Which ferry terminal and operator do the tickets use?
  • Is the passport validity requirement met for every traveller?

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If the total looks long for your group, send us the result with your dates and who is travelling. We can take a second look and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote that matches your route.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What questions does the list raise?

Every route gets the basics: the latest check-in time, which terminal your service uses, what happens if it is late or cancelled, and who meets you on arrival. Ferry routes add questions about the operator and passport validity. Flight routes add baggage allowance and arrival requirements.

If you tick children, seniors, bulky luggage or wheelchair support, the list adds questions for each. Ask the agency to confirm the answers in writing.

How does this help choose between places?

The result is a useful input for the Batam versus Bintan guide. Compare the door-to-door totals for both islands on your dates. Our Batam and Bintan pages explain what you get at the end of each journey.

What happens after you WhatsApp us?

We read your result and brief, then, with your consent, pass it to a licensed Malaysian travel agency, which prepares the quote. We are an independent guide, not the agency, and the referral is disclosed in our footer. Ask the agency to confirm timings, inclusions and cancellation terms in writing.

Questions Malaysians ask

Does the planner know ferry or flight schedules?

No. It holds no schedules or durations. You enter minutes for each leg from your own tickets and operator advice, and the tool adds them up.

What counts as a leg?

Each step between your door and your hotel: travel to the terminal, check-in buffer, Malaysian departure immigration and security, the crossing or flight, arrival immigration and baggage, and the transfer to your hotel.

Why does the question list change?

The list follows your route type and the needs you tick, such as children, seniors, heavy luggage or wheelchair support. Each need adds questions to confirm with the operator.

What if some legs are empty?

The tool shows how many legs are filled and warns that the total is incomplete. Fill the gaps from your tickets or ask the operator before you compare routes.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
