A tipping budget for drivers, guides and spas
You want to thank the people who look after your family without guessing each day.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Tipping in Indonesia is a personal choice, and a small planned envelope removes the daily guesswork. Decide the amount once, before you fly, and hand it over with a sincere thank-you. This guide shows how to treat tips as their own line in your budget.
It sits within our budgets and package decisions hub. Use it together with the trip cost calculator so the tipping line is visible from the start.
Who might you tip on a trip?
Think in groups of people rather than in single moments. The table shows the usual places where a thank-you comes up.
| Who | When it comes up | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver | End of the trip or each long day | One group envelope, handed over together |
| Local guide | After a temple, hike or cultural visit | Smaller envelope per guided day |
| Spa therapist | After the treatment | Check whether a service charge is already on the bill |
| Hotel porter | At arrival and departure | A few small notes kept in your pocket |
| Restaurant staff | After a meal | Read the bill for a service charge first |
Treat the table as a prompt for your own plan. Your agency can tell you what the driver and guide expect for your route.
How do service charges change the picture?
Hotels and restaurants can add a service charge and a local tax to the bill. Our glossary page on service charge and pajak explains the labels you will see. If the charge is already there, a separate tip is your choice, not an obligation.
Check each bill before you decide. A line that reads service or tax means the staff may already share something from the total.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you want the tipping line to appear in your quote, tell us your party size and number of service days. We will flag it as a separate row and, with your consent, pass your brief to a licensed agency.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.How do you set the envelope?
Work out the number of service days first: the days a driver or guide is with you. Then decide a comfortable thank-you for each day, and multiply. Add a small amount for spa visits and porters.
A worked example for your own family is more useful than a published figure, because group size and route length change the answer. Our Indonesia holiday budget guide shows where the tipping line sits among the other rows.
Which currency and notes should you carry?
Rupiah notes in small and mid values are easiest, because staff can use them at once. Read our guide on changing ringgit to rupiah before you exchange, and keep a few notes separate from your main wallet. Our rupiah glossary page helps you read the note values.
Bring crisp notes from your bank or a licensed changer. Torn or heavily folded notes can be refused in shops, so a flat envelope helps.
What should you ask the agency?
Ask whether tips are included, excluded or only suggested, and whether the driver is paid per day or per trip. Ask also whether the guide fee covers a gratuity. The reply goes straight into your budget row.
For a longer list of items that sit outside the headline price, see what Indonesia packages leave out. A tipping row belongs on that list.

Questions Malaysians ask
Is tipping compulsory in Indonesia?
Tipping is a personal choice and a warm gesture rather than a rule. Hotels and restaurants can add a service charge, so check the bill first. For a private driver or guide, a thank-you at the end of the trip is welcome and easy to plan for.
Should I tip in ringgit or rupiah?
Rupiah works best, because drivers and spa staff can use it straight away. Changing a small envelope of cash before the trip, or at a licensed money changer, keeps things simple. Notes in good condition are easier to hand over.
Is the tip included in my package price?
Ask the agency in writing. Some quotes list tips as excluded, and some mention a suggested amount. If the line is blank, treat tipping as your own cost and add it to your budget.
How do I tip when a group shares one driver?
Agree on one amount as a group on the last evening and hand it over together. That avoids one family covering everything and keeps the thank-you clear to the driver.
Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
