Lombok costs: boats, transfers, resort

A Lombok trip cost is built from seven lines: airport transfers, driver days, boats, the stay, meals, entry fees and extras. What lines make up a Lombok trip?

If a line is missing from a quote, ask for it in writing. A missing line is a question, not a saving.

Why does the base change the cost?

Lombok is spread out. The north coast, the south coast and the Gili islands sit far apart, so a plan that moves between them adds driver hours and boat legs. A plan that stays in one area keeps those lines short.

Ask the operator to write out the base for each night and the drive between them. If you split nights between two areas, tell the agency early, because a third base adds a transfer day that a quote can leave out.

How do driver days affect the budget?

A driver day is priced by the vehicle and the hours. A trip built around one resort may need a car for the airport and a couple of outings. A touring trip needs a driver for each day.

Ask the quote to state the driver days clearly, with the hours and the overtime rule. Ask whether fuel, tolls and parking are inside the price. A day that looks cheap may leave these lines to you.

How do boat costs work?

Boat legs depend on the harbour, the boat type and whether the ticket is one way or return. Lombok has more than one departure harbour, and the right one depends on where you sleep. Our guide to Lembar, Bangsal and Kayangan ports compares them.

Ask each quote which harbour it assumes and who carries luggage at each end. Ask what happens if the sea is rough and the boat is cancelled. A boat line that is left vague becomes a cost you pay at the pier.

What does isolation cost at a resort?

Some Lombok resorts sit far from towns and restaurants. That suits a quiet couple or a family who plans to stay put, but it changes the cost of leaving the property. Every outing needs a car or a shuttle, and meals outside the resort add to the bill.

Which lines stay unpriced?

Some costs sit outside a quote even when the total looks complete. Check for these:

• Entry fees at waterfalls, beaches and villages.
• Local guide fees at trekking and waterfall sites.
• Meals not covered by the plan, and drinks.
• Tips for the driver, boat crew and hotel staff.
• Travel insurance and the arrival card steps.

How do you compare a north, south and Gili plan?

Match the days, the party size and the starting point. Then list every line for each plan, mark what is included, and add the missing lines to the shorter quote before you compare totals. Use the trip cost calculator to see the total in ringgit.

Compare how each plan feels as well as the figure. A cheaper plan with a long boat leg and two transfer days may cost you the rest you were hoping for.

How do you keep the trip inside a ringgit ceiling?

Set one ceiling for the whole trip before you ask for quotes. Then ask each operator to show which lines sit inside it and which do not.

Keep a margin for meals, tips and entry fees, because these are the lines that drift. Review the list once more a few days before you travel, so a changed boat or a swapped room does not surprise you at the pier.
