Indonesia entry checklist for Malaysians

You are a week from flying and want to know what to sort out before the airport.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Before you fly to Indonesia, check three things: your passport, your return ticket details and the official arrival steps. Entry conditions are set by Indonesian immigration and can change, so use this page as a checklist and confirm every item on the official pages before you travel.

The sections below are ordered by time, so you can tick items off from weeks before the flight until you arrive.

What should you sort out weeks before?

Start with the passport. Look at the expiry date, and read the official immigration pages for the validity period they require. If the passport is close to that limit, renew it first. Children and babies need their own passports.

Next, decide where you will stay, and keep the booking and address ready. Check that the names on your flight tickets match your passports exactly. The overview of departures from Malaysia shows how the checks fit with your route.

What should you prepare in the week before?

  1. Save copies of passports, tickets and hotel bookings on your phone.
  2. Check the official portal for the arrival declaration, using only the official address.
  3. For Bali, plan to pay the tourist levy through the official portal.
  4. Confirm airline baggage rules, and the terminal on your booking.
  5. Tell your bank you are travelling, and carry a small amount of local cash.

The glossary entries on the All Indonesia arrival card and the Love Bali levy explain the terms. The entry rules tracker collects the official pages in one place.

How does the Bali levy fit in?

Visitors to Bali pay a tourist levy. The Love Bali portal lists the international amount at IDR 150,000 [1]. The step-by-step page on how to pay and check the Bali levy shows the process, and the voucher arrives by email after payment.

Use the official portal only. Fake sites copy the look of official ones, as how to spot fake arrival-card sites explains.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you want a second pair of eyes on your documents before you fly, send us your dates, party and route. We can walk through the checklist and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What happens at the airport?

At the departure airport, check in with your passport and booking. On arrival in Indonesia, you queue at the immigration counter, where an officer checks your passport and may ask about your stay. Answer simply with your hotel and your return plan. Keep return ticket details on your phone.

The note on passport validity, onward tickets and border questions goes through what an officer may ask. If you are travelling by ferry, see JB to Batam passport and immigration steps.

What to ask your agency or airline

Before you pay, ask these in writing:

  1. Which documents does the airline require at check-in?
  2. Does the package include the levy or arrival-card help, or are they separate?
  3. Who meets us after immigration, and where?
  4. What is the plan if the flight is delayed?
  5. Which official pages should we check, and when?

So are you ready to go?

You are ready when the passport meets the official validity, tickets and bookings are saved on your phone, the arrival declaration and any levy are done through official pages and your group knows the plan. If anything is unclear, ask before you fly rather than at the counter. Always check the official immigration pages before you travel.

Questions Malaysians ask

What documents do Malaysians need to enter Indonesia?

Carry a valid passport, return or onward ticket details and your accommodation address. Entry conditions are set by Indonesian immigration and can change, so confirm the current requirements on the official immigration pages before you fly, and treat any blog as a pointer only.

Do I need to complete the All Indonesia arrival card?

Indonesia runs an official online arrival declaration. Check the official portal for how it applies to your arrival, and use only that address. Fake copies exist, so never pay a third party to complete it unless you understand what the fee covers.

Do Malaysians pay the Bali tourist levy?

The Love Bali levy applies to international visitors to Bali, and the portal shows the current amount. Pay only through the official Love Bali portal and keep the emailed voucher on your phone. Check the current rules before you fly.

How early should I check my passport?

Check it as soon as you pick dates, because renewing a passport takes time and the required validity is set by immigration. If the passport is near expiry, renew it before booking non-refundable tickets. Children need their own passports.

Can an agency complete the entry steps for me?

Each traveller completes entry in person, and a licensed agency can give you a written document checklist, point you to the official pages and meet you after arrival. Ask for the checklist with your quote.
