Malaysian school holidays 2027: Group A and B
You are matching your children's term breaks to an Indonesia trip and want the busy weeks flagged early.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
The 2027 school year starts on 4 January for both groups, and ends on 2 December for Group A and 3 December for Group B [1]. Group A is Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, while Group B covers the other states and the Federal Territories [2]. The term breaks below show which weeks collide with Indonesian holidays and Bali ceremonies.
Start with the season, activity and traveller-fit hub if you are still choosing a destination. Then use the table here to pick your weeks.
What are the 2027 term breaks?
The session dates come from the Ministry of Education announcement. The break dates below come from a calendar summary, so check the Ministry’s official calendar before you pay [3] [4].
| Break | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | 5 to 13 March | 6 to 14 March |
| Mid-year | 21 May to 5 June | 22 May to 6 June |
| Term 2 | 27 August to 4 September | 28 August to 5 September |
| Year-end | 3 to 31 December | 4 to 31 December |
Dates can move when festival holidays are added, and the Ministry has said some extra festival days do not need to be made up [7]. Treat the table as a planning draft until your school confirms.
Which Indonesian dates overlap each break?
Indonesia lists Nyepi on 8 March, Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March, Idul Adha on 17 May, Waisak on 20 May and Independence Day on 17 August [5]. That means the March break meets both Nyepi and the Hari Raya rush. Our Nyepi 2027 guide and Ramadan and Hari Raya guide cover that week.
The mid-year break sits beside Idul Adha and Waisak, so expect local holiday crowds in Indonesia. The August break meets Independence Day on 17 August and Galungan on 11 August, with Kuningan on 21 August [6]. Our Galungan and Kuningan guide explains what visitors will see.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If your family has a fixed break week, send us the dates and ages of the children. We can take a second look at which weeks are quieter and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.Which break suits which kind of trip?
- March: best suited to flexible families who can handle closures and full flights. Book early and check the Nyepi airport notice.
- May to June: works for beach and city trips, with the dry season beginning. Expect busy domestic holidays on the Indonesian side.
- August to September: the dry season, with ceremonies that add colour. Flights and villas fill first, so plan ahead.
- December: long enough for two bases, but it falls in the wet season. Our wet season guide shows how to plan for it.
How should you book around a fixed break?
Fix the flights and the first and last nights first. Ask your agency for a list of every leg that cannot be changed. Read the school-holiday flight and ferry booking windows guide for timing, and the peak-season surcharge guide for what to check on the quote.
Children and grandparents travel better with one easy first afternoon and one flexible day. If your break is short, choose one base and leave the second island for another trip.
Keep planning
- School-holiday flight and ferry booking windowsEveryone in the family has the same weeks off, and so does every other Malaysian family.
- Peak-season surcharges and blackout datesYour leave lands in a school holiday and the quote suddenly has a line you did not expect.
- Indonesian public holidays that affect travelYou have booked your leave, and then you learn the whole country is also on holiday.
- Where to stay: area guidesYou know the island, but the choice of base still decides how tired everyone feels.
- Airport pickup fees and hotel transfersYou land tired, and the hotel's pickup offer arrives with a price you cannot judge.
- Attractions and cultural places in IndonesiaYou have limited leave and a long list of temples, and you want the days to feel unhurried.
Questions Malaysians ask
Which states are in Group A and Group B for 2027?
Group A is Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Group B covers Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya. The Ministry of Education announced the groups with the 2027 session dates.
Are the term break dates official?
The session start and end dates come from the Ministry of Education announcement. The term break dates here come from a calendar summary, so confirm them on the Ministry's official 2027 academic calendar before you pay for flights or non-refundable hotels. Dates can be adjusted for festivals.
Which 2027 school break is best for Bali?
The August break is useful for the dry season, but Independence Day and Galungan add local activity. The March break meets Idul Fitri and Nyepi. The year-end break is long but sits in the wet season. Match your priority, whether weather, price or calm, to the week.
How early should I book for a school-holiday trip?
Book flights and key hotels as soon as the Ministry's calendar is confirmed, because break weeks fill first. Ferries and fast boats between islands also tighten. Ask the agency which legs are non-refundable and what each change costs before you commit.
