Bali in the wet season: still worth going?

You spotted cheaper rooms and fewer crowds, and you want to know what the rain really costs you.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Bali in the wet season is worth it if you want lower prices and a quieter island, and you plan indoor options for the showers. One travel guide describes the season as November to March, hot and humid, with rain in the morning and afternoon [1]. The rain rarely stays all day, so each day can still hold a good outing.

When is the wet season, exactly?

Sources disagree a little. One guide gives November to March, with heavier rain and strong winds possible from January to mid-April [1] [2]. Another guide gives different months in different sections and names January as the wettest [4].

Plan with a buffer on both sides. If you are travelling in October, April or early November, check the forecast a few days ahead.

How does the rain behave?

Rain falls in the morning and afternoon, and skies can clear for a few hours after a heavy downpour [1]. Another guide notes that Bali rain tends to clear quickly [4]. Humidity makes it feel hotter than the thermometer says.

Keep a rain jacket and a light change of clothes in the day bag. Better still, hire a car with a driver so you stay dry between stops [4].

What do you gain, and what do you give up?

Time for spas, cooking classes and cafes A perfect photo schedule

Families on a ringgit budget may find the saved room cost worth a few wet hours. Our Bali shoulder season guide shows the in-between months.

What still works well in the rain?

Temples, cooking classes, Ubud cafes and yoga studios suit wet weather [3]. Add a spa afternoon, a museum visit or a craft workshop. Our Bali rainy-day activities guide lists ideas, and the rainy-day plan B for sightseeing days shows how to swap stops.

Diving, snorkelling and surfing are better in drier months because visibility is poor, and big hikes are best left for another trip [3]. Check opening days for any venue before you go.

How do you plan a wet-season trip on a budget?

  1. Choose one base to save on transfers, and keep drives short.
  2. Ask the agency for a list of indoor options for each day.
  3. Keep one free day so a washed-out morning can move.
  4. Leave a buffer day around any island boat trip, and travel in the morning when seas are calmer [5].
  5. Check what travel insurance covers, using our Indonesia travel insurance checklist.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Bali worth visiting in the wet season?

It is worth it if you accept showers and plan indoor options. Rooms and activities cost less, the island is quieter, and rain clears within hours. It is a weaker fit if your trip depends on diving, big hikes or long beach days. Match your priorities to the week.

Which months are the wettest in Bali?

Guides disagree slightly on the exact months, but they place the wet season roughly from November to March, with January named as the wettest. Heavier rain and wind can run into April. Plan with a buffer on both sides, and check the forecast a few days before you travel.

Does it rain all day in the Bali wet season?

Rain falls in the morning or afternoon and skies clear for a few hours between showers, according to the guides we read. Days of non-stop rain are uncommon. Keep mornings for outdoor sightseeing when you can, and book an indoor activity for the wetter hours.

Are fast boats to the Gilis or Nusa Penida reliable in the wet season?

Sea conditions can delay or cancel boats, so leave a buffer day on either side. Reputable operators move or cancel sailings when swell is high. Travel in the morning, check the forecast and ask about the cancellation policy before you pay.
