Galungan and Kuningan: what visitors notice

You land in Bali, see tall bamboo poles along every street and wonder what is happening.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Galungan is a ten-day Balinese Hindu festival, and visitors notice it first as tall bamboo poles arching over every street. In 2027 Galungan falls on 13 January and 11 August [1]. Resort areas stay open, and the main planning point is your driver and the roads.

For other calendar events, see the season, activity and traveller-fit hub. Our Galungan glossary entry and Kuningan entry explain the terms.

What are Galungan and Kuningan?

Galungan marks the victory of dharma over adharma, the Balinese idea of order over disorder. It happens every 210 days, always begins on a Wednesday and lasts 10 days, ending with Kuningan [2]. The Pawukon calendar, not the Gregorian one, sets it, so the festival can fall twice in one calendar year.

In 2027 Kuningan follows on 23 January and 21 August [1]. On Kuningan, offerings use yellow rice, and Balinese Hindus believe ancestral spirits return to the spiritual realm.

What will you actually notice on the street?

The penjor is the sign of the festival. These are tall, curved bamboo poles decorated with coconut leaves, fruit and flowers, each with a small shrine at its base for offerings [3]. Whole lanes are lined with them, which makes for striking photos.

You may also see families in traditional dress carrying offerings to temples, and children taking a barong figure through the streets with music. Small change given to the performers is a friendly gesture. Our Bali cultural etiquette guide covers dress and manners at temples.

What changes for drivers, tours and roads?

Local guides and drivers can take days off around Galungan, so book tours and transport in advance. The day after Galungan brings road congestion as families travel to visit relatives [4]. Large ceremonies can slow traffic near temples.

Plan one main outing a day and give your driver extra time for each drive. Our Bali traffic by time of day and area guide shows how to schedule the longest drive.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If your trip touches January or August 2027, send us your dates and the ages of your group. We can take a second look at the driver and day plan and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

Do restaurants and attractions close?

Restaurants, shops and attractions in tourist resort areas stay open [5]. Small family-run businesses may close for a day, so call ahead for small warung and family-run workshops.

Muslim travellers should keep their usual halal checks. Ask the agency for a meal-by-meal list and look for the BPJPH halal logo. Prayer rooms and mosques are still available, and our mosques and prayer times in Bali guide shows where to find them.

How can you watch respectfully?

Ceremonies are for families and temple communities, and visitors join only when a local invites them [5]. Treat them as events to watch from a distance.

Dress modestly, keep your voice low and stay behind the worshippers. Ask before photographing people at prayer.

A simple greeting, “Selamat hari raya Galungan”, is welcome. If you are unsure where to stand, ask your driver or guide, who will know the local rhythm.

Should you plan your trip around the festival?

Choose Galungan if you want to see the island dressed for a celebration. Choose another week if you prefer open roads and a full roster of drivers. Questions Malaysians ask

When are Galungan and Kuningan in 2027?

Galungan falls on Wednesday 13 January and Wednesday 11 August 2027, with Kuningan ten days later on 23 January and 21 August. The Balinese Pawukon calendar sets the dates, so they move against the Gregorian calendar. Confirm with a Bali calendar when you book.

Will attractions and restaurants be closed during Galungan?

Restaurants, shops and attractions in tourist resort areas stay open. Small family-run businesses may close for a day, and your driver or guide may take time off. Book your driver and tours ahead, and ask which days they work. Small warung and workshops are worth a phone call first.

Can tourists join Galungan ceremonies?

Ceremonies are family and temple events, open to visitors only if a local invites you. You can watch the street decorations, the penjor and any parades from a respectful distance. Dress modestly, follow your host or guide, and ask before taking photos of worshippers.

Is Galungan a good time to visit Bali with children?

It can be a lovely cultural week, as children enjoy the penjor and the barong parades. Plan shorter drives, because roads fill on the days around Galungan. Keep one flexible day, and tell your driver in advance which temples and viewpoints you want to see.
