Indonesian public holidays that affect travel
You have booked your leave, and then you learn the whole country is also on holiday.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Indonesian public holidays change how busy and how open your destination is. Nyepi in Bali brings the island to a stop, while Eid and long weekends mainly fill roads, ferries and attractions with domestic travellers. This guide lists the 2027 dates from the official decree [1] and explains what each means for a trip from Malaysia.
It belongs to our season, activity and traveller fit guide.
What does the 2027 holiday calendar look like?
The joint decree for 2027, signed on 15 September 2026, sets 18 national holidays and 8 collective leave days [1]. The dates that change a trip are these.
Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March [2]. Idulfitri holidays are 10 to 11 March, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March [2]. Iduladha is 17 May and Waisak 20 May, with collective leave on 18 and 19 May [2].
Eid dates are confirmed separately by the religious affairs ministry and can move by a day, so treat them as provisional. Read our guide on Ramadan and Hari Raya 2027 trip timing before you commit.
Which holidays close things, and which just crowd things?
| Holiday | What changes for you |
|---|---|
| Nyepi (Bali) | The island goes quiet; confirm flights and transfers well ahead |
| Eid and the days around it | Heavy domestic travel, fuller roads, ferries and sights |
| Waisak | Busier at Buddhist sites |
| Long weekends | Fuller attractions and tighter driver availability |
| Christmas and New Year | Busy beaches and higher demand in popular areas |
Nyepi is the only one on this list that stops the island. Our Nyepi explainer and the guide on Nyepi 2027 dates and airport closure show what to confirm.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If your leave overlaps an Indonesian holiday week, send us your dates and the island you have in mind. We can take a second look at crowds and closures and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.How does collective leave affect businesses?
Collective leave is optional for workers and counts against annual leave, so some private employers operate as usual on those days [3]. For you, that means tourist businesses can stay open, but offices, some shops and government services can be shut, and domestic travellers fill the roads.
Expect more traffic on the days before and after a long weekend. Ask your driver to suggest the best departure times, and check the driver day checker so the day is not too long.
How do these dates meet Malaysian school holidays?
Indonesian holiday weeks can overlap with Malaysian school holidays and Hari Raya, which doubles the pressure on flights and villas. Check our guide on Malaysian school holidays 2027 and book flights and drivers earlier if the dates coincide.
For Chinese New Year trips, our guide to Bali and the Riau Islands covers how that week looks in practice.
What do we do next?
Mark your leave days against the holiday dates, find any clash, and decide whether to shift by a few days or plan around it. If you are going to Bali, check Nyepi first, and ask the agency for confirmation of closures in writing.

Questions Malaysians ask
What is the difference between a public holiday and collective leave?
A public holiday is a fixed day off set by the government. Collective leave, or cuti bersama, is an extra day linked to a holiday to make a long weekend. It is optional for workers and counts against annual leave, so some businesses stay open.
Which Indonesian holiday closes things down?
Nyepi in Bali is the one that stops the island, so flights and transfers need checking. Other holidays crowd roads, ferries and attractions with domestic travellers, while tourist businesses stay open. Always check Nyepi dates before booking flights to Bali.
Do holiday dates change each year?
Yes. A joint ministerial decree sets the dates each year, and religious dates such as Eid are confirmed separately and can move by a day. Treat any date as provisional until the official calendar and your agency confirm it, and recheck close to departure.
Should we avoid Indonesian long weekends?
Not necessarily, but book early and expect busier roads and attractions. If your dates cannot move, plan the busiest sights for weekday mornings, confirm your driver's availability and keep the first and last days light so delays do not cost you a flight.
