Nyepi 2027: dates and airport closure to confirm

You have leave booked and want to know whether Bali's day of silence will catch your flight.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Nyepi, Bali’s day of silence, falls on Monday 8 March 2027 in Indonesia’s official holiday list [1]. The airport closes for about a day around Nyepi, and the 2026 closure ran for 24 hours [3]. Treat the 2027 hours as unconfirmed until your airline or the airport publishes them.

For the wider picture, start with the season, activity and traveller-fit hub. Then use this page to check your own dates.

When is Nyepi in 2027?

The joint decree on 2027 holidays lists Nyepi, the Saka New Year 1949, on Monday 8 March 2027 [1]. The Balinese lunar calendar sets it, which is why the date moves each year. Our Nyepi glossary entry explains the ceremony itself.

The night before is the ogoh-ogoh parade, when villages carry giant effigies through the streets. Roads around the parade routes can close early in the evening. The day before Nyepi is lively to be in Bali but slow to cross.

What closes at the airport and the ports?

In 2026, all flight operations at Ngurah Rai airport stopped for 24 hours from 06:00 local time on Nyepi day [3]. The same notice covered the sea routes. The Ketapang to Gilimanuk ferry stopped from 17:00 the evening before, Gilimanuk port stayed closed until the morning after, and the Padang Bai to Lembar route paused [4].

Use that as a pattern, not a promise. The 2027 notice was not published when we wrote this page. Ask your airline in writing what it will do if your flight sits inside the closure window.

Our Nyepi planning guide covers the day itself in more detail.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If your dates touch the first half of March, send us your flights and party size. We can take a second look at the sequence and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What is it like to be on the island that day?

Four rules shape the day: no fire or light, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Visitors stay inside their accommodation [5]. Local security officers walk the streets, and beaches and shops are shut.

Families with children and grandparents do best at a resort or villa that has planned for it. Ask the property whether meals are provided, whether the air conditioning and water keep running, and what the Wi-Fi policy is. A quiet day with board games can be restful if the food is arranged.

Why does 2027 need extra care for Malaysians?

Nyepi lands in the same week as the end of Ramadan. Indonesia lists Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March 2027, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March [2]. Our Ramadan and Hari Raya timing guide covers that crowd.

A school-calendar summary lists the Group B term break as 6 to 14 March 2027 [6], so Malaysian families may want the same week. Read the 2027 school holidays guide before you choose.

What should you confirm before you pay?

Work through this list with the agency or airline, and keep the answers in writing:

  1. Which day your flight lands and which day it leaves, relative to Nyepi.
  2. Whether the airline offers a free change if the closure shifts your flight.
  3. Who collects you the day before, and what time the hotel check-in allows.
  4. Whether meals, power and drinking water are covered on Nyepi day.
  5. Whether any ferry leg, such as Padang Bai to Lembar, sits near the closure.

If you would rather avoid the closure altogether, the best time to visit Bali for Malaysians compares other months. A trip that ends the day before Nyepi, or starts the day after, keeps the silent day out of your plan.

Questions Malaysians ask

When is Nyepi in 2027?

Indonesia's joint holiday decree lists Nyepi on Monday 8 March 2027. The Balinese calendar sets the date, so it moves each year. The airport closure hours for 2027 were not published when we checked, so confirm them with your airline before you pay for anything.

Can I fly into or out of Bali on Nyepi?

No regular flights operate during the closure. In 2026 the airport suspended operations for 24 hours from early morning on Nyepi day. Plan to land the day before or leave the day after, and ask your airline how it handles a booking that touches the closure window.

What can I do in Bali during Nyepi?

Stay in your hotel or villa. The island observes four prohibitions, including no travel and no entertainment, and local security officers enforce them. Ask your property about meals, power and Wi-Fi in advance, and bring books, games and snacks for the children.

Does Nyepi clash with Hari Raya in 2027?

It does fall in the same week. Indonesia lists Idul Fitri on 10 and 11 March 2027, and Malaysian Group B schools have a term break around then. Expect full flights, busy roads and higher fares, so book early and keep your dates flexible if you can.
