Group and connecting rooms for extended families
Grandparents, parents and cousins all want to stay close without sharing one cramped room.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
For an extended family, the best room plan keeps older relatives close to the children’s rooms, on a low floor, with at least one confirmed connecting pair. Confirm the layout in writing, because a hotel’s “family room” can mean very different things. A villa with a shared living area is a strong alternative when the group is large.
Start with the hotels, resorts and villas guide for the wider picture, then use this page as a booking checklist.
What do the room words really mean?
| Term | What it means | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Connecting rooms | Two rooms with an internal door | The door is a request, not always a promise |
| Adjoining rooms | Side by side, no inner door | You walk through the corridor |
| Same-floor rooms | Near each other, not touching | Check how far apart they are |
| Family room | One larger room with extra beds | Check bed type and occupancy |
| Villa | A set of bedrooms under one roof | Extra charges and stairs |
Use this table to match the words on the booking page with what you actually need. Our room types decoder covers bed labels in more depth.
One Nusa Dua resort sells a family connecting room as a named product: two rooms joined by an interior door, 70 sqm in total [1]. One room has a king bed and the other has two twin beds [1]. It is listed for two adults and two children, with occupancy capped at five [1].
A rollaway costs extra, while children under 12 sharing existing bedding pay no extra-person fee [1]. When a hotel sells the pair by name, the connecting door is part of the booking and not a favour. Ask for the same lines in writing at your hotel.
How do you plan the rooms?
Begin with who needs what. Grandparents want a ground-floor room near the lift and the dining area, couples want a quieter corner, and children are happiest next to a parent.
Then decide which rooms must connect. Two connected rooms for parents and children are enough; the rest can be adjoining or on the same floor. This keeps the cost sensible.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are planning rooms for three generations, send us the ages, number of rooms and your dates. We can pass the brief to a licensed agency who will check room layouts and get the answers in writing.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. What should you ask the hotel or agency?
Put these questions in one message and ask for written replies:
- Is the connecting door confirmed for my booking, or is it a request?
- What are the bed types and the occupancy limit in each room?
- How are extra beds and child ages charged? See family rooms, extra beds and occupancy rules.
- Are there stairs between the rooms and the dining area?
- Is breakfast included for every guest, including children?
- Can the rooms be held together if one guest cancels?
Clear answers prevent a tense queue at reception with tired grandparents.
Hotel rooms or a villa?
A villa keeps the whole family together and gives a shared kitchen or living area. It also brings electricity, staff and deposit charges that a hotel hides in the room rate. Compare the full cost, not just the nightly price.
If you need help comparing, the package inclusion comparator lays out what each option includes. For larger groups with a driver, see how costs stack up in the Bali family-of-five guide.
What about child fees?
Age rules for children change from hotel to hotel, and attractions use their own bands. Check the policy for each child, not only the youngest. Our guide to child age policies and fees explains what to ask.
Before you confirm, ask for a room plan with names, ages and bed types written next to each room. That one page makes check-in smooth and gives your agency something clear to work from.

Questions Malaysians ask
What is the difference between connecting and adjoining rooms?
Connecting rooms share an internal door that opens between them. Adjoining rooms sit side by side but have no inner door. Hotels sometimes use the words loosely, so ask for connecting rooms by name and get the answer in writing before you pay.
Can a hotel guarantee connecting rooms?
Hotels treat connecting rooms as a request, not a promise, because inventory changes. Ask whether the booking is confirmed for a specific room type with a connecting door. A written confirmation from the hotel or agency gives you something to point to on arrival.
Is a villa better than separate hotel rooms for a big family?
A villa keeps everyone under one roof with shared living space, which suits grandparents and young children. It can mean extra charges for staff and electricity, and rooms may be on different levels. Compare total cost and access, not only the nightly rate.
How do I handle prayer space and quiet for elderly relatives?
Ask for rooms away from lifts, bars and pool areas. Check whether there is a clear space for prayer and the direction of the qibla, the direction Muslims face when praying. Ground-floor rooms suit those who find stairs hard.
