Child age policies and fees in Indonesia

You are travelling with children and want to know who pays what before the bill arrives.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A child’s age can change four things on your bill: the bed, the breakfast, the entry ticket and sometimes the transfer seat. Each hotel and attraction sets its own age bands, so a child counted as free in one place may be charged in the next. Get the age rules in writing before you pay a deposit.

This guide belongs to the hotels, resorts and villas hub and works alongside the page on family rooms and extra beds.

Which four charges does a child’s age change?

Charge What can change Question to ask
Bed Free when sharing, paid when an extra bed or cot is added Is a cot free, and is there an age limit?
Breakfast A child may count as a guest from a set age At what age does breakfast become chargeable?
Entry ticket Child, local and foreign tiers can differ Which tier applies to my child, and is proof of age checked?
Transfer or tour seat A seat can be priced per person once a child needs one Does the vehicle price cover a child seat?

The same child can fall under different bands in each row. One Bali resort charges for an extra bed from age 6 to 12 and lets one child share with the parents [1], while a Borobudur fee list set its child band at ages 3 to 10 [2].

Write the answers down next to the child’s age.

How do you ask a hotel about child rules?

Send one message that carries everything. This template suits hotels and agencies alike:

  1. Our children are aged [age] and [age], travelling on [dates].
  2. Please confirm the child age bands for stay, breakfast and cot.
  3. Please state which charges apply to each child in our room.
  4. Please confirm whether the rate is per room or per person.
  5. Please reply in writing so we can keep it with our booking.

Keep the reply on your phone. At check-in, show it if the front desk shows a different figure.

What about breakfast?

Breakfast is where child rules catch families out. A rate marked “breakfast included” may cover the named adults only, with children charged separately from a set age. Our guide to what breakfast included means in Indonesian hotels explains how to read the line.

If your family needs halal meals, ask for the breakfast items by name, not only the headcount.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are comparing quotes and the child fees look different in each one, send us the children's ages and your dates. We can help you line them up and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

How do attractions treat children?

Attractions run their own price lists. Some have a child ticket, some separate local and foreign tiers, and some admit very young children without a ticket. Check the official operator page for the date you visit, since prices and rules are revised without notice.

Borobudur’s foreign-visitor list that ran until June 2022 priced ages 3 to 10 at US$15 and older visitors at US$25 [2]. Prices have been revised since, so read the operator’s current list for your date.

Carry a copy of each child’s passport. Staff at the gate may ask for proof of age to apply a child rate.

Who benefits from a package that lists child fees?

Families of four or more gain from a quote that states each child’s charges line by line. Without it, small items such as cot fees and breakfast add up at check-out. The package inclusion comparator lets you set two quotes side by side.

A better option when the lines stay unclear: ask the agency to attach the hotel’s child policy to the quote.

What should you do before you pay?

Confirm the children’s ages on the booking, collect the written policy, and ask whether the rate changes if a child’s birthday falls before travel. If a hotel refuses to state its rule in writing, compare another property.

When the list feels long, send your family details and we can help you check it. We pass your brief to a licensed agency only with your consent.

Questions Malaysians ask

Do children stay free in Indonesian hotels?

Some hotels let young children stay free when they share existing beds, others charge for an extra bed or breakfast from a set age. The rule belongs to each property and can change by season. Ask for the age bands in writing and confirm what the free stay includes.

Is the child age counted on the travel date or the booking date?

Ask, because properties differ. A child who turns a new age between booking and travel can move into a higher price band. State the child's date of birth in your message and ask the hotel or attraction to confirm which band applies on your dates.

Do attractions charge children the local rate or the foreign rate?

Attractions set their own ticket tiers, and some separate local, foreign and child categories. Check the official page or ask the operator, and note whether proof of age is requested at the gate. Carry copies of passports for children to avoid delays.

Should I tell the hotel my child's age even if the child shares our bed?

Yes, give the age with the booking. It helps the hotel assign the right room, cot and breakfast count, and it avoids disputes at check-in. Ask them to record the child on the reservation so the front desk sees the same information you sent.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
