Nyepi: what closes and how to plan

You like a silent island, but need to know where your family will be that day.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Nyepi is Bali’s day of silence, when the island stops almost completely. If your trip overlaps it, plan to arrive before the closure, spend the day inside your accommodation and depart after it. The airport closes, so a flight on that day is not possible.

This guide shows what closes, what you do and how to plan the days around it. For other timing decisions, start at the season, activity and traveller fit hub. The glossary entry on Nyepi explains its meaning.

What are the four rules of Nyepi?

During Nyepi 2026 visitors were asked to stay inside their accommodation from 6am on 19 March to 6am on 20 March [1]. The four rules cover no fire or light, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Villa guests follow the same rules as hotel guests.

Local security officers enforce the quiet. Treat it as a cultural moment you are invited into, not a closure you have to survive.

What closes on Nyepi?

The same guide lists Ngurah Rai International Airport, shops, restaurants, beaches and roads as closed during Nyepi [2]. Hospitals stay open for emergencies, and internet or mobile service may be restricted in some areas.

Area What to expect
Airport No flights in or out
Roads and transport Closed to ordinary traffic
Shops and restaurants Closed, so stock up beforehand
Beaches Closed
Hospitals Open for emergencies
Internet May be restricted in some areas

How do you plan the days around it?

Treat it as three days: the day before, Nyepi itself and the day after.

  1. The day before: buy food, water and snacks, charge devices and confirm what your hotel will provide. You may see the Ogoh-Ogoh parade that evening; read about Ogoh-Ogoh.
  2. Nyepi day: stay in, keep noise and lights low, and use the time for rest, board games, books and early nights.
  3. The day after: expect a slow restart, with roads and shops waking up through the morning.

Do not book a flight home on Nyepi, and avoid the following morning for tight connections. Our guide on Bali ceremony days and road closures covers other days when roads change.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If Nyepi falls near your dates, send them with your flight times. We will check the closure against your arrival and departure and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What about the date for your year?

Dates move with the Balinese calendar. Indonesia’s 2027 joint holiday decree lists Nyepi on Monday, 8 March 2027, so check the decree again before you book [3]. Our Nyepi 2027 dates and airport closure guide lists what to check.

Check your airline and the airport operator before you book, and ask your hotel what services it offers during the day.

How do families make the day work?

Pack activities that need no screens or light: cards, drawing books, puzzles and a torch for evening stories. Keep meals simple and prepared in advance. Choose a hotel with space to move around, and ask what it permits in outdoor areas.

If you arrive late the night before, our Bali late-flight arrival plan helps you settle in.

Should you avoid Nyepi or embrace it?

Embrace it if you want a quiet, memorable cultural moment and can plan around the airport. Avoid it if your leave is tight or you have a connecting flight. Either way, decide before you buy tickets.

Next, check the date for your year and send us your flight times so we can see how it lines up with your trip.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can tourists leave their hotel on Nyepi?

Visitors are asked to stay inside their accommodation for the full period, including villa guests. Beaches, streets and shops are closed, and local security officers enforce the rules. Stock up on food, water and activities the day before so the day feels restful.

Does the Bali airport close for Nyepi?

Yes, the airport has closed for the day with no flights in or out. Plan your arrival before the closure and your departure after it. Confirm the exact hours for your year with the airport or your airline, and keep a buffer night if you have a connecting flight.

Is Nyepi a good time to visit Bali with children?

It can be, if you prepare. The day suits families who enjoy a quiet, screen-light break, but toddlers need entertainment ready in advance. Pick a hotel with a pool or garden that is allowed to be used, and ask the hotel what it permits.

Do the lights have to be off?

The rules include no fire or light, so keep lights off or very dim and keep noise low after dark. Hotels explain what is allowed inside the property. Ask at check-in, and bring a torch or a battery lamp for safety indoors.
