Bali ceremony days and road closures
Your driver says the road is blocked for a procession, and the airport transfer is tomorrow.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Ceremonies in Bali rarely close the island, but they can slow a road, block a beach and change a day. Plan a buffer around transfers, ask your driver about the route on the morning, and treat Nyepi as the one day when the island genuinely stops. This guide separates what slows you, what closes a place and what only decorates it.
It belongs to our season, activity and traveller fit guide.
Which ceremonies slow the road?
Processions are the main cause. Melasti, a purification ceremony before Nyepi, sends worshippers on foot to the sea. About 15,000 worshippers from five villages gathered at Tanah Lot for Melasti on 26 March 2025, with tourists coming to watch [1].
Traffic gives way to a procession, so a short drive can take far longer.
Villages set their own schedules, so no single list covers every road. Ask your driver and hotel on the morning, and keep transfers to the airport away from tight connections.
What does Galungan change?
Little that closes things. During Galungan, Bali stays open and tourist areas remain active [5]. Penjor bamboo poles line the streets, canang sari offerings sit on sidewalks and roads, and visitors should ask before photographing a ritual [5].
Some banks, offices and small local warungs may close on the day itself.
The 2027 dates are 13 January and 11 August for Galungan, with Kuningan on 23 January and 21 August [4]. See our Galungan and Kuningan guide and the Galungan glossary entry for what visitors notice.
What does Nyepi close?
Nyepi is the day of silence, and it does stop the island. In 2027 it falls on Monday 8 March and is a national holiday [3].
For Nyepi 2024, the Bali Mandara toll road closed for 32 hours, from 23:00 WITA on Sunday 10 March to 07:00 WITA on Tuesday 12 March [2]. Emergency vehicles were allowed through under pecalang escort [2]. Police also advised avoiding congestion before Nyepi in 2025, and activities at Tanah Lot stopped for the day [1].
Plan arrivals and departures around the day. Our guides on what closes during Nyepi and Nyepi 2027 dates and airport closure list what to confirm.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If your Bali dates sit near a ceremony, send us your dates and your airport or hotel transfers. We can take a second look at timing and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. What should we ask the driver?
Use this short list:
- Is there a procession, ceremony or road closure on my route today?
- Which beaches or temples may be closed to visitors?
- What time should we leave to reach the airport with a buffer?
- Is there an alternative route if a road is blocked?
Add a buffer of an hour or more for airport transfers on ceremony days, and test your day in the driver day checker.
How should visitors behave?
Give way to processions, keep a respectful distance, dress modestly near temples and do not step on or move offerings. Avoid flash photography at close range and ask before filming. Treat a closed beach or temple as a ceremony in progress, not a mistake.
What do we do next?
Check your dates against Nyepi, Galungan and Kuningan, tell the agency about any airport transfer within a day of a ceremony, and keep your first and last days light. If you want a base with an easy route to the airport, our Bali guide compares areas.

Questions Malaysians ask
Will a ceremony block my airport transfer?
It can slow it. Processions to the beach move on foot and traffic gives way, so a short road can take much longer. On or near a ceremony day, leave extra time for the transfer and ask your driver to check the route that morning.
Does Galungan close Bali?
No. Tourist areas stay open, though some banks, offices and small local warungs may close. Expect penjor poles along the streets and offerings on the ground. Watch ceremonies quietly from a distance, step around the offerings and ask before taking photos.
What happens on Nyepi?
The island goes quiet for a day, and visitors stay at their hotels. The Bali Mandara toll road closed for a day and a half in 2024. Plan arrivals and departures around it and confirm your hotel's arrangements well ahead, including meals for the day.
How do we find out about ceremonies on our dates?
Ask your hotel and driver, because villages set their own ceremony schedules. Confirm the dates of Nyepi, Galungan and Kuningan for your trip, and ask the agency to flag any closures on your route in writing, including beach and temple access on the day.
