Wi-Fi, hot water and air-con: what to expect
You are tired after the flight and just want a cold room, a hot shower and a signal.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Hotels and resorts in Indonesian tourist areas offer Wi-Fi, hot showers and air-conditioning, but quality depends on the property type and how close you are to the equipment. Small homestays, rural villas and older buildings need a closer look. Three short questions sent before you book will settle nearly all of it.
This guide sits within our wider hotels, resorts and villas guide. Use it as a pre-arrival checklist.
How reliable is Wi-Fi in the room?
Wi-Fi is the item that differs from one stay to the next. A hotel lobby may have a strong signal while a room at the far end of a garden gets a weak one.
Ask three things: does the signal reach the bedroom, is it free, and is there a device limit per room. If you work remotely or video-call grandparents at home, bring a local SIM or an eSIM as backup.
On sockets, Indonesia uses type C and F plugs at 230 V and 50 Hz, while the most common socket in Malaysia is type G [1]. The voltage matches, so a plug adaptor is all your chargers need. Pack one for each charging device, since rooms may have few sockets near the bed.
What about hot water?
Tourist hotels list hot showers as standard, but the supply can be thin in small guesthouses and countryside stays. A shared heater may run out when everyone showers at the same time.
Ask whether each room has its own heater. For children and older parents, a quick reply in writing is worth the effort, especially in hill areas where the nights feel cooler.
Will the air-con keep up?
Air-conditioning is common in hotel rooms, but villas and homestays differ. Some tie the unit to a key-card slot, so it switches off when you leave, and some charge extra for electricity.
Ask whether the air-con can run all night, whether the unit is split or a fan only, and how the villa bills power. Our note on villa extra charges explains the usual add-ons.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are travelling with older parents or young children and want comfort confirmed in writing, send us your dates and party. We can pass your brief to a licensed agency, who can check these details with each property.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.Quick comparison by stay type
| Stay type | Wi-Fi | Hot water | Air-con |
|---|---|---|---|
| City or resort hotel | Strong in public areas, check the room | Standard | Standard |
| Private villa | Check coverage in each bedroom | Check heater size | Check overnight use and billing |
| Homestay or rural stay | Can be basic | Ask about supply | Sometimes fan only |
Use the table to decide what to confirm first. A room type listed with air-con and hot water in the name is easier to trust than a vague description; our room types decoder helps read the labels.
What should you send before arrival?
Copy this into a message to the property:
- Does Wi-Fi reach the bedroom, and is it free?
- Is hot water available all day, and is the heater private to the room?
- Can the air-con stay on overnight, and is electricity included?
- Who do I call if something stops working?
A calm, specific message gets a calm, specific reply. If a rural stay is part of your plan, read the rural stays guide for noise, insects and power.
What if something does not work on arrival?
Tell reception straight away, in daylight, with a photo. Properties can offer a technician or another room, and the earlier you ask, the more options exist.
If you booked through an agency, message them too. Reading recent reviews with a Malaysian eye also helps; see how to read hotel reviews for Malaysian needs for the keywords to search.

Questions Malaysians ask
Is hotel Wi-Fi in Indonesia strong enough for video calls?
Hotel lobbies and rooms close to the router work well, but a far-off villa room can be weak. Ask the property whether Wi-Fi covers the bedroom, not only the lobby. If you need to work or call family, consider a local data SIM or eSIM as backup.
Do all rooms have hot water?
Hotels in tourist areas normally list hot showers, but small homestays and rural stays may offer limited supply. Ask whether the heater is shared or per room and how long it lasts. Showering at off-peak times helps in smaller places.
Will the air-con run all night?
In larger hotels the air-con runs on demand, but some villas and homestays link it to a key card or a timer. Ask whether the unit can stay on overnight and who pays for extra electricity. Villas may charge separately, so confirm in writing.
What if the room feels damp or the air-con does not cool?
Tell reception straight away, on arrival rather than at bedtime. A fresh room, a technician or a swap is easier to arrange in daylight. Take a quick photo of the problem so the staff and your agency can see exactly what you mean.
