Bali villa extra charges: electricity, staff, deposits

You found a villa that fits the budget and now want to know what the quote leaves out.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A villa quote that looks cheap per night can grow once electricity, staff, cleaning and a security deposit are added. The extras are normal, but they are not the same from one villa to the next. Ask each owner or agency to state these lines in writing, then compare the whole-stay total rather than the headline rate.

This guide belongs to the hotels, resorts and villas hub. If you are still deciding between a villa and a hotel, read our comparison of villa versus hotel for families in Bali first.

What charges can sit outside the nightly rate?

Use this table as a checklist. Fill in every row for every villa you consider.

Charge How it can be billed Question to ask
Electricity Included, capped per day, or metered Is air-conditioning counted, and how is the meter read at check-out?
Water and pool care Included, or a refill and chemical fee Is a pool attendant visiting, and on which days?
Cleaning Daily service, alternate days or a final clean Is linen change included, and on which days?
Staff and service Service charge on top, or a tip pot Is a gratuity already included?
Security deposit Held in cash or by transfer When is it returned, and how are deductions explained?
Extra guest Per person per night above stated occupancy Does a child count, and from what age?
Breakfast and kitchen Cooked on site or ordered in What is the grocery arrangement, and who cooks?
Tax and levy lines Added to the total Is the quote before or after tax and service?

A villa with a cook may list a meal fee, and a villa with a private chef may add the cost of groceries. Ask for the arrangement in plain language.

Percentages on top of the base rate are where totals move most. One Nusa Lembongan villa lists its rates exclusive of tax and service, then adds 10% tax, a 7% service charge and a 10% bond on the rental [2]. Another villa may quote one all-in figure, so compare totals and not headline rates.

The Bali tourist levy is a separate line, set at 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (IDR) and paid online through the official Love Bali site [1]. If a quote shows a tourist tax, ask whether it is that levy or a villa charge, and check the current rule on the official site before you fly.

How does electricity billing work?

Villas rely on air-conditioning, pool pumps and hot water. Owners therefore protect themselves with an allowance or a meter. Ask three things: is electricity included, is there a daily cap, and what rate applies above the cap.

Request that the meter reading is taken in front of you at check-in and again at check-out. A calm record with photos avoids disputes later. If the quote says “included”, ask whether that covers air-conditioning left on all day.

Which season changes the extras?

Peak weeks can bring minimum-stay rules, higher cleaning fees and special event surcharges for festive dates. Quiet weeks can bring free upgrades or waived fees, but only when you ask. Tell the owner your dates early and ask for any seasonal line to be listed in the quote.

School-holiday weeks need extra care, so ask for the cancellation terms at the same time as the extras.

How do staff and deposits work?

Staff may include a caretaker, a cleaner, a pool attendant and a security person. Some villas include them in the nightly rate, and some add a service charge. Our villa staff privacy and tipping guide explains what is expected and how to arrange privacy.

A security deposit protects the owner against damage and missing items. It is returned after inspection at check-out. Ask for the amount, the method, the return date and the process for deductions, then keep the message with your booking.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If the villa quotes you are comparing look different line by line, send us your dates, party size and the quotes. We will give them a second look and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a clearer quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What extras matter for families and Muslim travellers?

Families with children can face charges for cots, high chairs, extra bedding and extra guests. Ask whether the pool has a gate or fence, since that can change the price or the setup. Our page on private pool villas with small children covers what to check.

Muslim travellers can ask whether the kitchen can be pork-free and whether a cook can prepare halal meals from verified ingredients. Ask for a written list of what is possible, and look for the halal logo of the Indonesian halal agency on packaged goods.

Who suits a villa and when is a hotel better?

A villa suits groups who want space, privacy and a kitchen, and who are happy to settle small extras on arrival. A hotel suits travellers who prefer a single price with breakfast and daily service bundled. If your party is small and your stay is short, a hotel quote is simpler to compare.

Better options when the villa line is unclear: ask the agency to attach the villa’s terms to the quote and compare with the package inclusion comparator.

How should you ask for the full cost?

Send one message with the questions below, and keep the reply:

  1. Please list everything on top of the nightly rate for our dates and party.
  2. Please state whether electricity is included, capped or metered.
  3. Please state the deposit amount, the method and the return date.
  4. Please confirm staff, service charge and tip arrangements.
  5. Please confirm the maximum number of guests and the extra-guest rule.
  6. Please confirm whether the total is before or after tax and service.

Put the answers in the trip cost calculator to see the whole stay in ringgit before you choose. Prices shift by season and party size, so fixed numbers are left out here.

What should you do on arrival?

Walk through the villa with the manager, note any existing damage with photos, and confirm the meter reading. Ask who to call after hours, and save the number. At check-out, repeat the walk-through and ask for the deposit return in writing.

If any line stays unclear, send us the quote and we will help you read it. We pass your brief to a licensed agency only with your consent.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is electricity included in a Bali villa rate?

It depends on the villa. Some include a daily allowance and bill extra use, others meter all of it, and some include everything. Air-conditioning running all day is the biggest driver. Ask whether electricity is included, capped or metered, and how the meter is read at check-out.

How does a security deposit work for a villa?

The deposit is held against damage, missing items and unpaid extras, and it is returned after check-out inspection. Ask the amount, the form it is held in, when it is returned and how deductions are explained. Request the terms in writing before you pay any transfer.

Do I need to tip villa staff on top of the quote?

Tipping is a personal choice, but some villas expect a gratuity for the pool, cleaning and kitchen team. Ask whether a service charge is already included. If not, a small envelope handed to the villa manager at check-out is the usual courtesy. Our guide on villa staff privacy and tipping covers the etiquette.

What extras can appear for a family with children?

Child-related extras include a cot, a high chair, extra bedding, fence or pool gate requests and an additional guest fee beyond the stated occupancy. Ask for each item and its price when you request the quote. A villa that sleeps your party on paper can still charge for guests above the listed number.

How do I compare a villa quote with a hotel quote fairly?

Line up the same items: room count, breakfast, cleaning, electricity, pool care, deposit and transfers. A villa nightly rate can exclude lines that a hotel bundles. Use a table, fill in every row for both options, and compare the whole stay total rather than the headline rate.
