Bangsal to the Gilis: boat timing and cut-offs

You are driving toward the harbour and wondering whether the last boat will still be there.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

The public boat from Bangsal has no fixed timetable you can trust, and it stops in the late afternoon. The guide advises arriving at Bangsal or Teluk Nare by 16:00 [2]. Work backwards from that time, because the drive is the part that tends to run late.

This guide sits in our domestic access routes hub. For the islands themselves, read the Gili Islands overview.

Why does the public boat have no timetable?

Public boats run whenever the boat is full, which may involve waiting [3]. You buy a ticket at the ticket office, and no pre-booking is needed [3]. On a busy day the boat fills fast. On a quiet day you wait.

That logic changes how you plan. You cannot book a seat to guarantee a time, so build a cushion into the day.

How long is each crossing?

The crossing is short. It takes about 15 minutes to Gili Air, 30 minutes to Gili Meno and 45 minutes to Gili Trawangan [1]. The fare quoted from Gili Air in June 2024 was Rp 18,000 on the public boat, against Rp 85,000 on the fast boat [5]. Fares change, so confirm at the office.

If you are choosing between the two, read public boat vs fast boat to the Gilis. Pick your island with which Gili island suits you.

How do you work back from the cut-off?

Start from the late-afternoon limit and subtract each leg.

  1. Cut-off at the harbour: arrive by 16:00 [2].
  2. Add a buffer for waiting until the boat fills.
  3. Subtract the drive. A taxi from Lombok airport to Bangsal or Teluk Nare takes about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours [4].
  4. Subtract time for bags, immigration and a snack.

A flight that lands after midday leaves little room. If your plane lands late, read Lombok airport to Gili Air and plan the first night on the Lombok side.

What if you miss the last boat?

You have two sensible options. Book a chartered speedboat through your hotel, or sleep on the Lombok side and take the first boat in the morning. Chartering costs more, so ask for the price before you commit.

Pre-arrange the plan with your hotel on the islands. Tell them your flight and expected harbour time, so they can warn you if the day looks tight.

Which harbour will your driver use?

Drivers may name Bangsal or Teluk Nare. Both appear in guides as departure points for the Gilis, so confirm which one your ticket or charter uses. Our guide to Lembar vs Bangsal vs Kayangan explains how the ports differ.

What should you carry to the harbour?

Keep small rupiah notes for the ticket and any porter, a bottle of water and your hotel name on your phone. Pack light, because bags go in and out of the boat by hand. Put anything you need on the crossing in a day bag, and send the rest through with the luggage.

If you come from Bali by sea instead, see the fast boat guide from Padangbai, which lands you on the islands without this cut-off.

Questions Malaysians ask

What time is the last boat from Bangsal to the Gilis?

There is no single published time to rely on. The guide advises arriving by mid-afternoon because transport stops well before dark. Treat the afternoon as the limit and ask your hotel for the current cut-off.

Do I need to book the public boat in advance?

No pre-booking is needed. You buy a ticket at the ticket office and the boat leaves when it is full, so a quiet day can mean a longer wait.

Which island is closest to Bangsal?

Gili Air is the nearest at around fifteen minutes, then Gili Meno, then Gili Trawangan. The closer island suits families who want a short crossing after a long drive.

What if I arrive after the last public boat?

Options are a chartered speedboat booked through your hotel, or a night on the Lombok side and the first boat the next morning. Ask your hotel to arrange either before you travel.
