Public boat vs fast boat to the Gilis
You are watching the budget and wondering what the cheaper boat really asks of you.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
The public boat from Bangsal costs less, but the fast boat from Bali asks less of you. A June 2024 Gili Air quote listed Rp 18,000 on the public boat and Rp 85,000 on the fast boat for the same short sea trip [1]. The right choice depends on where you start and who is travelling.
This comparison belongs to our domestic access routes hub. For the islands themselves, see the Gili Islands overview.
How do the two boats compare?
Both reach the same islands, but they start from different places. Here is the trade-off for a first-timer.
| Point | Public boat from Bangsal | Fast boat from Bali |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | Lombok mainland | Padangbai in Bali |
| Timing | Leaves when full, so waiting is part of it [2] | Fixed sailing times |
| Sea time | Short crossing | About 1 hour 30 minutes to Gili Trawangan [3] |
| Land legs | A long road to Bangsal first [4] | Road to Padangbai first |
| Best suited to | Budget groups already on Lombok | Families flying into Bali |
The public boat is cheap per seat, but the road to Bangsal takes about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours from Lombok airport [4]. Keep that leg in your total.
When does the public boat make sense?
It suits you if you are already on Lombok and have flexible time. It also suits budget groups who accept a wait. Arrive early, because transport stops in the late afternoon and the guide advises arriving by 16:00 [2].
Read the Bangsal boat schedule and cut-offs before you go. It explains how to work backwards from the last boat.

It suits you if you start from Bali and want one sea leg. The crossing to Gili Trawangan takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on standard sailings [3]. Families with young children or grandparents do better with fixed sailing times.
Work out the whole day with the Padangbai fast boat guide. If you are also weighing a slower, cheaper Bali crossing, compare it with the Padangbai to Lembar public ferry.
What does the cheaper boat really cost?
The fare is only part of it. Add the driver or taxi to Bangsal, the wait for the boat to fill, and any hotel night you need if you miss the last boat. For a group of four, the saved fare per seat can disappear into the road leg.
Our trip cost calculator helps you put the legs side by side in ringgit. Add a driver quote if you need one.
How should you choose?
- Starting in Bali with children or grandparents: fast boat.
- Already on Lombok, flexible and watching the budget: public boat.
- Landing at Lombok airport after midday: plan a night on the Lombok side first.
If you have not picked your island, read which Gili island suits you.
Keep planning
- The Gili islands, planned for MalaysiansYou picture a car-free island day, but the boat times decide whether it works.
- Lombok, planned for Malaysian travellersYou want quieter beaches than the busiest island and need to know what the roads ask.
- Bali, planned for Malaysian travellersYou have limited leave, a family to keep happy and one island everyone keeps recommending.
- Adisutjipto or YIA: which airport do flights use?Your booking names an airport you half remember, and you want to be sure where you land.
- Are the Gili islands worth the effort? You have a few days of leave and wonder if one more boat is worth it.
- Bali airport immigration queues and fast-track questionsYou land tired in Bali and wonder whether a paid fast lane is worth it.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is the public boat cheaper than the fast boat?
On the short crossing from the Lombok mainland it is far cheaper per person. Add the road to Bangsal and the wait for the boat to fill, and the saving shrinks for a family that must also pay for a driver.
Which boat suits grandparents and young children?
The fast boat from Bali has one sea leg and a booked seat, so it asks less of tired passengers. The public boat has a short crossing but a long road before it.
Can I take a public boat from Bali?
The public car ferry from Padangbai lands at Lembar, not at the Gilis. The Gilis then need a road transfer and a boat from Bangsal.
Do fast boats stop at every Gili?
Sailings are listed island by island, and some continue to the Lombok coast. Ask your operator which harbour you land at before you pay.
