Bali to the Gilis by Padangbai fast boat
You have a few days of leave and want the sea crossing to feel planned, not rushed.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
The fast boat from Padangbai is the quickest sea route from Bali to the Gilis. The crossing to Gili Trawangan takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on the standard sailings [1]. The sea is only one leg, so plan the whole morning around it.
This guide sits in our domestic access routes hub. Read it with the Gili Islands overview if you are still choosing an island.
What are the legs from Bali to the Gili harbour?
Think in legs, not in one crossing time. Each leg has its own buffer, and the buffers are what keep a first-timer calm.
| Leg | What to know |
|---|---|
| Hotel to Padangbai | The road from south Bali takes about 1 hour 30 minutes [4] |
| Harbour check-in | Arrive early; the operator tells you the cut-off for your ticket |
| Sea crossing | About 1 hour 30 minutes to Gili Trawangan [1] |
| Gili harbour to hotel | Ask your hotel how luggage reaches the room from the harbour |
Ask your driver to add a margin for traffic on the way out, and leave earlier than the minimum.
Which sailing should you pick?
Pick the earliest sailing that your hotel can reach without a rush. The sample timetable shows first departures around 08:00 and the last listed departure around 14:00 [2]. That leaves little room if your morning goes wrong.
For Gili Air the crossing is about 2 hours, with the first ferry around 08:30 and the last around 14:00 [3]. Some operators list longer crossings to Trawangan, up to 2.5 hours [1]. Confirm the vessel and the listed duration when you book.
If you are not sure which island fits, read which Gili island suits you before you buy a ticket.

Sea conditions can stop a sailing. Plan a fallback before you leave, not at the harbour.
- Ask the operator how rebooking works if the sailing is cancelled.
- Keep the next morning free, so a delay costs you a day of relaxing, not a flight.
- Know the slower alternative: the Padangbai to Lembar public ferry followed by a road transfer and the public boat from Bangsal.
The fallback is slower but it exists. Our Bangsal boat guide explains the last leg.
Fast boat or public boat?
The fast boat is bought in Bali and delivers you straight to a Gili harbour. The public boat from Bangsal is the budget route and starts from the Lombok side. Compare the two in public boat vs fast boat to the Gilis.
Families with small children or grandparents do well with the fast boat, because there is one transfer instead of three. Budget-led groups may prefer the Lombok route and accept the longer day.
What should you carry and confirm?
Keep your luggage light, because bags move from the harbour by hand or cart. Keep passports, ticket confirmation and the hotel name on your phone. Ask whether your ticket includes the harbour pickup in Bali.
Before the return, work out your onward leg. If an international flight follows, leave a spare night between the boat and the flight.
You can also compare the sea route with a flight using the ferry vs flight planner.
Keep planning
- The Gili islands, planned for MalaysiansYou picture a car-free island day, but the boat times decide whether it works.
- Lombok, planned for Malaysian travellersYou want quieter beaches than the busiest island and need to know what the roads ask.
- Bali, planned for Malaysian travellersYou have limited leave, a family to keep happy and one island everyone keeps recommending.
- Adisutjipto or YIA: which airport do flights use?Your booking names an airport you half remember, and you want to be sure where you land.
- Are the Gili islands worth the effort? You have a few days of leave and wonder if one more boat is worth it.
- Bali airport immigration queues and fast-track questionsYou land tired in Bali and wonder whether a paid fast lane is worth it.
Questions Malaysians ask
How long is the fast boat from Bali to the Gilis?
The sea crossing from Padangbai to Gili Trawangan is listed at about one and a half hours, and Gili Air at about two hours. Add the road to the harbour and check-in time, and the whole day is better planned as a half-day move.
What is the last fast boat from Padangbai?
Timetables list the last sailings around early afternoon, and they change by season and day. Treat the afternoon as too late, book a morning boat, and confirm the exact time with the operator before you pay.
Which Gili will the boat stop at?
Sailings are listed per island, and a few boats continue onward. Ask the operator which harbour you land at and book the island that matches your hotel, so you avoid a second boat on the same day.
What if the sea is too rough?
Operators cancel or delay when conditions are poor. Keep a buffer night before any international flight, and ask your operator how refunds or rebooking work before you buy.
