Who pays for fuel, parking and tolls

The quote looks clear until you wonder who covers the small costs along the way.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A private driver quote can list fuel, parking and tolls in the price or leave them out, and both are normal. What matters is that you know which one you have been given. Ask the agency to write down every cost line before you pay.

This checklist helps you compare two quotes on the same terms. It also stops small cash costs from becoming an argument on the day.

Which costs need a clear answer?

Cost Questions to ask Included in the price?
Fuel Is it in the day price, or charged by distance? Ask
Toll roads Who pays, and do I get a receipt? Ask
Parking Is it covered, or passed on at cost? Ask
Driver’s meals Is lunch part of the price? Ask
Entrance fees Which are mine, and how are they paid? Ask
Overtime What is the rate for extra hours? Ask
Tips Is service included, and what is customary? Ask

The right-hand column is the same word on purpose: every line depends on the agency, so none should be assumed. Fill it in from the replies you receive.

Why do agencies handle these costs differently?

Some bundle everything into one day price so guests carry no small bills. Others quote a lower base and pass fuel, parking and tolls on at cost, which can suit guests who prefer to see the receipts.

Neither approach is wrong. The risk lies in comparing a bundled quote with a base-only one and calling the second cheaper. Our guide on what a Bali private driver package includes shows the same issue in a worked layout.

What should I ask in writing?

  1. Is fuel included in the day price, and does a long route change that?
  2. Who pays tolls and parking, and will I see receipts?
  3. Are the driver’s meals included, or do I pay them?
  4. Which entrance fees and donations are mine?
  5. What is the overtime rate, and when does it begin?
  6. Is there a charge for waiting time at sites?
  7. What is customary for a tip, and is it left to me?

Keep the replies with your booking papers. Compare them against a second quote line by line using the package inclusion comparator.

How do I keep the day simple?

Ask the driver to tell you at the start of the day which costs the agency covers and which you will settle. Carry a small amount of cash for parking and entrance fees, since not every site takes cards.

If you prefer, ask the agency for a quote that bundles everything, and read how hours and overtime work on a driver day. For tips, see our tipping budget guide.

Who does this clarity help?

Groups splitting costs across families gain a lot, since each household wants to know its share. First-time visitors also gain, because small cash costs are easy to miss when you are still finding your way.

When you want a single fixed price, ask for an all-in quote and accept a slightly higher headline in return for fewer small bills. For the wider planning picture, start from the domestic access routes hub.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is fuel included in a private driver quote?

Practice differs between agencies and packages, so ask rather than assume. Some quotes bundle fuel into the day price, others list it separately or tie it to distance. Ask for the line in writing and check whether a long route changes it.

Who pays for parking and toll roads?

Again it varies by quote. Some agencies include parking and tolls in the price, others pass them to you at cost with a receipt. Ask which, and ask the driver to show you the receipts so the numbers match what you were told.

Do I pay the driver's meals?

Ask the agency whether the driver's lunch is part of the price. Some quotes include it, while others leave it to the guest or the driver. A clear answer saves an awkward moment at the restaurant and helps you plan the break.

Are entrance fees part of the driver day?

Attraction tickets, temple donations and sarong hire may sit outside the vehicle price. Confirm in writing which are yours, and keep a small cash reserve for the day. The package comparator tool can help you line up two quotes.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
