What a clean MOTAC watchlist proves
You searched an agency's name, found nothing and wonder if that settles it.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
A clean watchlist result means a name does not appear on a list of entities found to have broken the law. It does not mean the agency holds a valid licence. Treat the watchlist as a second look, and the licence search as the main check.
Both lookups sit within our booking and responsibility guide.
What are the two MOTAC lookups?
MOTAC’s Unlicensed Tourism Entity Search lists companies or entities found to have broken the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [1]. Its Travel Agency Search is a separate service for looking up licensed travel agencies [2].
One lookup lists wrongdoing that has been recorded. The other confirms registration. They answer different questions, so a result from one cannot stand in for the other.
Why is a clean result not enough?
A new or unregistered business may never have reached the watchlist. A name can be missing simply because nobody has acted on it yet, or because you searched a brand name that differs from the registered company.
So a clean result narrows one worry only. It does not show that a licence exists, that it is valid for your travel dates or that the quote in front of you is genuine.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If a name came up clean but something still feels uncertain, send us the quote and the name. We can walk through the other checks and pass your brief to a licensed agency.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.How do you use the two lookups together?
Follow this order:
- Search the licence first, using the registered company name on the quote.
- Note the licence number, status and validity.
- Search the same name on the watchlist as a second look.
- Compare the findings with the invoice and the payment account name.
If the licence shows and the watchlist is clean, the picture is consistent. If the licence is missing, pause, whatever the watchlist says. The steps for the first search are in how to check a Malaysian travel agency licence.
What else completes the picture?
Some checks sit outside both lookups. Ask whether the payment account carries the company name, whether the quote lists inclusions and exclusions in writing, and whether availability is confirmed for your dates.
The questions to ask an agency before paying a deposit turn these into a short list. Keep a screenshot of every search result with the date, in case you need to show it later.
What to do next
If both lookups look fine, move to the quote and payment terms. If the licence is missing or the names differ, ask the agency to explain in writing before you transfer any money.
A calm message with your questions is enough to start. Parents arranging a family trip for grandparents may feel extra pressure to book quickly, but a day spent on these checks costs far less than a lost deposit. Take the time, keep your screenshots and ask the agency to put its answers in writing.
Keep planning
- Booking your Indonesia trip with confidenceYou are about to pay a deposit and want to know who is responsible for what.
- How to check a travel agency licence (MOTAC)You like an agency's quote and want to confirm it is properly licensed first.
- Questions to ask before paying a depositThe quote looks right and you are one transfer away from committing.
- Where to stay: area guidesYou know the island, but the choice of base still decides how tired everyone feels.
- Airport pickup fees and hotel transfersYou land tired, and the hotel's pickup offer arrives with a price you cannot judge.
- Attractions and cultural places in IndonesiaYou have limited leave and a long list of temples, and you want the days to feel unhurried.
Questions Malaysians ask
What does a clean watchlist result mean?
It means the name you typed does not appear among entities listed for breaking the Tourism Industry Act. It says nothing about whether the agency holds a valid licence, so run the licence search as well.
Should I check the watchlist or the licence search first?
Start with the licence search, because it answers the main question: is this seller registered. Use the watchlist as a second look, particularly when a name looks unfamiliar.
Can a brand name hide an entity on the watchlist?
It can, since brands and registered companies can differ. Search both the brand and the company name on the invoice, and note any difference to ask the agency about.
What else should I check besides these two lookups?
Check that the payment account name matches the company, that the quote lists inclusions in writing and that availability is confirmed for your dates. Together these cover what a lookup cannot.
