One base vs hotel changes: the cost of moving
You are weighing one comfortable room against seeing more places, with parents and children in tow.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
One base wins when the group includes grandparents, toddlers or anyone who tires quickly, or when your list of sights sits within a short drive. Hotel changes win when the places you want are far apart and each stay has a clear job. Every move costs more than the taxi fare, so count it before you commit.
This guide sits inside our regional itinerary design series.
What does a move day really cost?
A move day has more parts than it seems:
- Packing and breakfast under time pressure.
- Check-out, then the drive with luggage.
- A wait for the new room, because early check-in is not guaranteed.
- A lost half-day, since nobody has energy for a sight after a long transfer.
Distance on the map hides the real time. One Bali guide puts the Ubud to Uluwatu drive at about 2 hours 15 minutes at midday and over 3 hours in the late afternoon peak [1]. A move on that route consumes the afternoon.
How do the two options compare side by side?
| Question | One base | Hotel changes |
|---|---|---|
| Energy per day | Steady, no packing | Dips on move days |
| Sights within reach | Those within a day trip | A wider spread |
| Luggage handling | Once | Once per move |
| Good for grandparents | Yes, familiar room | Possible, with short moves |
| Good for toddlers | Yes, stable nap spot | Harder, naps shift |
| Cost of time | Daily drives from the base | Half a day per move |
| Best when | Rest is the goal | Places are far apart |
Both options can work. The test is which cost you are happier to pay.

Pick one base if your sights cluster, if there are children under school age, or if there are grandparents who prefer to rest in the afternoon. A multi-island operator says it allows time in each place to settle in, and to reset after long journeys [2]. A single base builds that time into every day.
For Yogyakarta, a base in the city or near Borobudur both work, as covered in staying near Borobudur or in Yogyakarta city.
Who should change hotels?
Change hotels when two areas have different jobs and the drive between them is long enough to bite. A classic example is Ubud for culture and the south coast for the beach. Our Bali Ubud and south split stay route shows how to do it with one move on a light day.
Limit yourself to one change in a short trip. A second change costs more than the new sights give back.
How do you decide fairly?
Write down the places you want, and mark which sit within a short drive of each other. If the bulk of them cluster, stay in one base and use day trips. If they form two clusters, use two bases and put the move on a rest day.
To compare costs fairly, put each option into the package inclusion comparator so that transfers, meals and driver days sit in the same frame. Then ask the agency which days include a driver and which meals are covered. For halal needs, request a meal-by-meal list and look for the Indonesian halal logo.
Keep planning
- Itinerary design by regionYou have limited leave and want a plan that fits the island, not a list of everything.
- A Bali split-stay: Ubud then the southYou want culture and a beach in one week without losing a day to luggage.
- Package inclusion comparatorTwo quotes look alike, yet one leaves out the driver, the meals or the entry tickets.
- A slower Yogyakarta cultural itineraryYou want temples and palaces without rushing parents or grandparents from one ticket queue to the next.
- Where to stay: area guidesYou know the island, but the choice of base still decides how tired everyone feels.
- Airport pickup fees and hotel transfersYou land tired, and the hotel's pickup offer arrives with a price you cannot judge.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is changing hotels worth it on a six-night trip?
It can be, if each hotel has a clear job, such as a quiet inland stay and a beach stay. One change in the middle is easier than two. If the move falls on a busy day, the cost rises, so match the move to a rest or light day.
Which option is better with grandparents?
One base keeps the day calmer for grandparents, since the room, the bed and the bathroom stay familiar. A second base can work if the route between them is short and the hotels have lifts or ground-floor rooms. Ask about stairs before you book.
How do I compare the real cost of each option?
Add the room cost, the transfer cost and the value of the time you lose. A cheaper room can cost more if it adds a long drive each morning. List each move as a line and compare it with the sight you gain.
