A Bali split-stay: Ubud then the south
You want culture and a beach in one week without losing a day to luggage.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
A split stay works when you move once, in mid-morning, on a day with nothing else planned. Ubud gives you rice terraces, temples and slow mornings, while the south coast gives beaches, dining and an easy run to the airport. Together they make a balanced week for a first visit.
For other route shapes, browse the regional itinerary design hub. Our Ubud page and Bali page describe each base in detail.
Should you start in Ubud or in the south?
Both orders work, and your flight decides. A late arrival suits the south first, because the airport is closer to the beach areas and you sleep sooner. A morning arrival suits Ubud first, when you are fresh enough for the longer drive.
| Order | Best suited to | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud first, south second | Calm start, beach finish, easy airport day | A longer first drive after the flight |
| South first, Ubud second | Late arrival, beach-first families | Ending inland with a long drive home |
If you cannot decide, ask the driver which order saves time between your hotels and the airport.
What does a seven-day split look like?
Keep the hotel move on a light day, and give each base at least three nights so it feels settled.
| Day | Plan | Pace |
|---|---|---|
| One | Arrive, transfer to Ubud, early dinner | Light |
| Two | Ubud market, palace and a museum | Medium |
| Three | Temple and rice-terrace drive | Medium |
| Four | Morning in Ubud, move to the south in mid-morning | Light |
| Five | Beach, pool and a long lunch | Light |
| Six | One outing: a temple, a cultural show or a spa day | Medium |
| Seven | Relaxed morning, airport transfer | Light |
Add a second Ubud day or a south-coast day if your leave is longer. The Bali drive-time table helps you estimate how long each leg takes.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are weighing how to divide the week, send us your dates, flight times and who is travelling. We will take a second look at the route and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.How do you make the hotel move painless?
The move itself takes only part of a morning, but luggage and check-in times can eat the day. Plan it carefully.
- Ask the Ubud hotel for a late checkout, or to hold your bags.
- Confirm the driver’s pickup time, and agree it in writing.
- Keep swimwear and medicines in a small day bag.
- Ask the south hotel whether early check-in is possible, or a bag drop.
- Eat lunch at the new base, not on the road.
A short stop on the way, such as a craft village, can make the transfer feel like part of the trip. Keep it to one stop.
What should you ask the agency?
Compare quotes by asking the same questions every time:
- Is the Ubud to south transfer included, and is it a private vehicle?
- Are both hotels’ breakfasts and checkout times written in the quote?
- Can the driver wait while you check in?
- What does a change of base cost if our plans shift?
Read our Ubud versus southern Bali base guide if you are unsure whether a split is worth it.
Better options when a split is too much
For a trip of four days or fewer, one base is calmer. Families with toddlers or grandparents may prefer Sanur alone, with day trips. Use the region chooser to compare, and keep your luggage light.
Keep planning
- Bali, planned for Malaysian travellersYou have limited leave, a family to keep happy and one island everyone keeps recommending.
- Ubud as your Bali base, for MalaysiansYou want rice terraces, quiet mornings and culture, and you are wondering how far the beach really is.
- Itinerary design by regionYou have limited leave and want a plan that fits the island, not a list of everything.
- Indonesia region chooserYou have one trip's worth of leave and six regions all asking for it.
- A first-time guide to Bali cultural-visit etiquetteYou want to visit temples and ceremonies in Bali respectfully, without worrying about getting it wrong.
- A slower Yogyakarta cultural itineraryYou want temples and palaces without rushing parents or grandparents from one ticket queue to the next.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is it better to stay in Ubud first or the south first?
Ubud first suits a calm start, then you finish with the beach and an easy airport run. South first suits late arrivals, since the airport is closer. Pick the order that matches your flight time and who needs rest first.
How long should I spend in each base?
A week splits well into three or four nights in Ubud and three in the south. Each base needs at least three nights to feel settled. Two nights in a place leaves little time between the transfer and the next packing day.
How long is the transfer between Ubud and the south coast?
Distance on the map is short, but the drive depends on traffic, so ask your driver for the current time between your two hotels. Place the move in mid-morning, after breakfast, and keep the afternoon free.
Can I leave luggage if check-in is later than my arrival?
Hotels can hold bags at reception before check-in and after checkout, but confirm this in writing. If you need a late checkout, ask early. Pack a small day bag so you can swim or sightsee while rooms are being prepared.
Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
