North Lombok stays: Sire and Tanjung
You want a quieter Lombok corner for two, within reach of the Gili boats and the waterfalls.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Sire and Tanjung suit couples who want a calmer stretch of Lombok with sea views and little night-time bustle. The trade-off is distance: the north coast is further from the airport and has fewer restaurants within walking range. Pick it when quiet matters more than convenience.
For the bigger picture of how the island divides, read Lombok regions explained. It helps you see where the north sits against the south and west.
Who does the north coast suit?
Quiet couples and small groups do best here. You can spend a morning at the beach, take a day boat to the Gilis, and return to a calm evening. Families with grandparents can also manage if the hotel is flat and the car stays with you.
This area is better suited to people who are comfortable eating at the hotel or at a nearby warung. If you want a long strip of restaurants, a base in Senggigi is the better option. Our Senggigi or Kuta Lombok guide compares the two main alternatives.
What is the access effort like?
The north is one of the longer transfers on the island. Lombok’s airport is in the centre-south, so you cross much of the island to arrive. Roads are shared with trucks and motorbikes, and times shift with the day.
Plan arrival as a half-day with a rest stop and no tours attached. Our guide on what a secluded stay adds to transfer time explains how to ask about this before you book.

The strength of the north is access to the Gili boats and the northern waterfalls. Day trips to the Gilis leave from the nearby harbour area, and the schedule matters because the last departures are earlier than you might expect.
For boats, read Bangsal to Gili boat schedules and cut-offs. For land trips, see the Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls guide.
What do we not yet know for you?
Every hotel here differs, and specific properties are best checked with your agency. These details need confirming with your agency:
- Walking distance to food and a shop.
- Whether the beach in front is suitable for swimming on your dates.
- Which kitchens are halal and whether pork is excluded.
- Whether the road to the property is easy for a car at night.
A message to us with your dates and group can make those questions concrete.
Keep planning
- Lombok, planned for Malaysian travellersYou want quieter beaches than the busiest island and need to know what the roads ask.
- The Gili islands, planned for MalaysiansYou picture a car-free island day, but the boat times decide whether it works.
- Lombok regions: north, south, east, westYou are looking at a map of Lombok and cannot tell which corner suits your trip.
- Canggu as a Bali base, honestlyYou have been to Bali before and want surf cafes and rice-field views, but not a stressful commute.
- Kuta Lombok: the south coast baseYou have seen Bali already and want open beaches, quiet evenings and a slower rhythm on Lombok.
- Nusa Dua: the resort enclave, explainedYou want an easy, contained resort stay for the family and wonder what lies beyond the gates.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is Sire or Tanjung a good base for a quiet couple?
It can be. The north coast has a calmer feel than the busier southern and western strips, with fewer evening options. It suits couples who are happy to eat at the hotel or nearby warungs and want sea views. Confirm distance to food before booking.
How far is North Lombok from the airport?
It is one of the longer transfers on the island, because the north coast lies across Lombok from the airport. Road times vary with traffic and route. Ask your driver for a current estimate and avoid planning tours on arrival day.
Can I reach the Gili boats from Sire and Tanjung?
The north-west coast is the closest stretch of Lombok to the Gili boats, which is a strength of this area. Public and fast boat departure points differ, so confirm your harbour, schedule and last departure with the agency.
Is halal food easy to find on the north coast?
Lombok is Muslim-majority, so local halal warungs are common. Resort restaurants vary. Ask the hotel which dishes and kitchens are halal, and look for the BPJPH halal logo where certification matters to you.
Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
