Lombok regions: north, south, east, west

You are looking at a map of Lombok and cannot tell which corner suits your trip.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Lombok has four corners worth knowing: the west around Senggigi, the north around Rinjani and the northwest coast, the south around Kuta, and the quiet east. The west is the easiest first base, the south suits beach and surf people, and the north suits active or secluded stays. Pick one area, add a second only if your leave allows.

This guide sits within our regions and destination choices hub. The Lombok destination page gives the overview.

How is Lombok divided?

Lombok’s administrative map has four regencies (West, Central, East and North Lombok) plus Mataram city, the provincial capital and largest settlement [1]. Visitors rarely think in regencies, though. They think in areas: west coast, north coast, south coast and east.

The four corners feel quite different, and the table keeps them side by side.

Area Feel Suits Check
West (Senggigi) Busiest hub, widest facilities First-timers, families Beach quality varies
North (Rinjani, coast) Trekking, waterfalls, upmarket hotels Active travellers, quiet stays Distance from the airport
South (Kuta, Mandalika) Surf, long beaches, new resorts Beach lovers with a driver Few facilities nearby
East Sparse, local life Independent travellers Limited places to stay

What does the west offer?

A travel guide describes Senggigi as the busiest tourist hub, with Batu Bolong and Mangsit offering quieter beaches [2]. That makes the west a gentle starting point: hotels, restaurants and sunset views sit in one strip, and the Gili ports are reachable from here.

If you want a practical comparison, read Senggigi versus Kuta Lombok. It covers drive times and the kind of evening each area offers.

What does the north offer?

The same guide describes North Lombok as centred on Mount Rinjani, with trails starting from Senaru and Sembalun Lawang [2]. Tanjung and the Sire and Medana peninsulas are known for upmarket hotels and villas [3]. The north rewards travellers who want quiet or a hiking base.

It also means a longer drive from the airport, so ask the agency how the transfer is split. Our guide on north Lombok stays at Sire and Tanjung explains what a secluded stay adds to the journey.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are unsure which part of Lombok matches your leave and your party, send us your dates and who is travelling. We can look at the route with you and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

What does the south offer?

The south is described as a surfers’ coast around Kuta [2], and Mandalika is a resort area [3]. Beaches here are long and open, and the pace is slower than the west. Stays here suit travellers with a driver, because attractions are spread out.

Read Kuta Lombok, who it suits before you pick a base. If you want to see how the south compares with Bali’s coast, the region chooser tool can help.

What does the east offer?

The east is described as sparsely populated, with few facilities, and visitors tend to pass through its ports [2]. It suits independent travellers who enjoy empty roads. For a first holiday with family, the other three corners offer more comfort.

How do I choose one or two bases?

Use a simple rule: choose a base by the activity you will do each day. If you want beach and dinner, choose west or south.

If you want trekking or quiet, choose north. If you add the Gili Islands, make sure your port matches your base, and compare ports in our guide to Lembar, Bangsal and Kayangan.

Check halal food and prayer arrangements for each area, and ask for a meal-by-meal list. If you would like us to look at your route, send your dates, party and budget in ringgit.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which part of Lombok is best for a first-timer?

Senggigi on the west coast suits a first visit because it has hotels, restaurants and sunsets close together, with quieter beaches nearby. If surf and long beaches matter more, the south coast around Kuta fits better. Pick one area and add the Gili Islands only if you have the days.

How far apart are the regions of Lombok?

Distances are long enough that a move between regions can use half a day, so check driving time rather than guessing from the map. Ask your driver for the time from the airport to each area and between areas before you decide where to base.

Where do boats to the Gili Islands leave from?

Fast boats from Bali and public boats to the Gili Islands use ports on Lombok's northwest side, and Bangsal is the one visitors name. Port choice affects your transfer time and cutoffs, so confirm the port and boat times with your operator before you book your hotel.

Is east Lombok worth visiting?

East Lombok has few facilities, and visitors mostly pass through its ports on the way elsewhere. It suits travellers who enjoy empty roads and local life more than hotels. For a first holiday, west, north and south offer more choice.
