For a first trip, base in Kuta Lombok if you want beaches near the airport, in Senggigi if you want an established resort strip with sunset views, and in the north if you plan to hop to the Gilis. Lombok is spread out, so one or two bases beat three. Treat the island as a set of separate stays joined by road.

How far is each from the airport?
Kuta Lombok is about a 20-minute drive from the airport [1]. Senggigi lies just north of the capital, Mataram [2], so the drive is longer and depends on traffic. The north is further still.
