An Indonesia packing checklist by region

You are zipping the suitcase and wondering what a beach island needs that a highland town does not.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Start with one core list for every Indonesia trip, then add a short extra list for the region you are visiting. Beach islands need sun and water gear, highland towns need a light layer, and temple days need modest clothes. This keeps the suitcase light without leaving out what you will miss.

The lists below are written for Malaysians flying from Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Johor-side airports, including families and Muslim travellers. For where to go in the first place, try the region chooser.

What goes in the core list?

These items suit every region.

  • Passport with enough validity, plus copies of bookings and insurance.
  • Light, breathable clothes and one layer for air-conditioning.
  • Sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • A compact rain jacket or umbrella.
  • Power adapter, power bank and a charging cable.
  • Regular medicine in its original pack, plus basic first aid.
  • A small bag for day trips, and some small notes for tips and parking.

Check your passport date and the entry steps on the official immigration pages, and again before you fly.

What else do I need for Bali and Lombok?

Beach and island days add a few items: reef-safe sunscreen, quick-dry swimwear, water shoes for rocky entries and a dry bag for boat trips. Bring a light shirt for temple visits and a scarf or sarong.

Bali asks international visitors to pay a tourist levy. The Love Bali portal lists the amount at IDR 150,000, paid online by bank transfer, virtual account or QRIS, with a voucher sent by email [1]. Keep that voucher with your documents. See our Bali guide for more about getting around the island.

What else do I need for Lake Toba, Berastagi and Bromo?

Highland places feel cooler in the morning and at night. A light jacket, closed shoes with grip and a head torch for early starts are worth the space. Long trousers help on cool viewpoint mornings and on stepped paths.

Roads in these areas wind, so travel-sickness tablets suit anyone who feels queasy. Read winding roads and motion sickness on long transfers if a family member is prone to it.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are packing for a mixed trip, such as Bali then Lombok or Medan then Lake Toba, send us the route and months. We can suggest what to adjust and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

What else do I need for Java and Yogyakarta?

Temple and city days are hot and walk-heavy. Pack comfortable walking shoes that are easy to remove, a scarf or sarong for temple grounds and a refillable bottle. Light long sleeves help in the sun as much as in the temple.

What do Batam and Bintan need?

These are short-hop resort trips by ferry. Pack a day bag with the passport at hand for terminal checks, swimwear, and light luggage that is easy to carry across ferry terminals.

What should families and Muslim travellers add?

Families should add spare clothes for children, wet wipes, snacks and any comfort item. For long transfers, put these within reach in the cabin, not in the boot.

Muslim travellers may want a prayer mat, a compass app and a list of nearby prayer spaces. For food, ask for a meal-by-meal list and look for the BPJPH halal logo. A family trip planning worksheet can turn these into a shared list.

What is the next step?

Make a copy of the core list, add the region extras and pack a day bag first, since it is what you will carry daily. For the wider picture, return to the Indonesia methods hub.

Questions Malaysians ask

What should every Indonesia trip include?

Your passport with enough validity, copies of bookings, light breathable clothes, sun protection, a rain layer, a power adapter and any regular medicine in its original pack. Add region extras on top of this core list.

What do I wear to temples?

Cover shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf or sarong in case the site asks for one. Malaysians already pack modest clothes for other trips, so this adds little weight.

Do I need a jacket for Lake Toba or Bromo?

Highland areas can feel cool in the morning and evening, so a light jacket is sensible. Check the forecast for your dates, since conditions vary by season.

What about the Bali levy?

Bali asks international visitors to pay a tourist levy, paid online on the Love Bali portal. Keep the emailed voucher with your documents, and check the portal before you fly.
