How to choose a domestic airline in Indonesia

You are connecting two Indonesian islands and the cheapest fare may not suit your day.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Choose a domestic airline by the total journey, not the headline fare: baggage, timing, change terms and the airport you land at. Garuda Indonesia is a full-service airline with economy, business and first classes, and Citilink is its low-cost subsidiary, operating under its own certificate since 2012 [1]. Other carriers also fly the main routes, so compare them on the same points.

For the bigger picture of getting between regions, start with our domestic access routes hub. Then use this page to compare airlines.

What should you compare, apart from price?

Price is one line on a longer list. The table sets out the points that change the outcome for a first-timer.

Point Why it matters What to check
Baggage A bag fee can erase the saving Free allowance for your fare and aircraft
Departure time Early or late flights change your hotel night Whether the time suits check-out and check-in
Airport and terminal Changes the transfer and the hotel choice Which airport and terminal the ticket names
Change terms Plans move, especially with children Fee and process to change or cancel
Connections A missed link costs a night Buffer between flights and one ticket or two

Our baggage and check-in rules checklist goes deeper on the first row.

Who suits a full-service fare and who suits a low-cost one?

A full-service fare suits families with bags, travellers who want a meal bundled and those who want simpler change terms. A low-cost fare suits light travellers, short hops and people comfortable adding extras only when needed. Better options when neither fits: ask the agency to price both on your actual bags and dates.

Allowances differ by airline, fare and aircraft, so confirm them on the booking page rather than relying on a general rule. Our guide to flight reschedules and schedule changes explains what to expect if a time moves.

How do connections change the choice?

If your trip involves a transit in Jakarta or another hub, the choice of airline affects how the connection is handled. A single ticket keeps the connection under one booking.

Two separate tickets leave the missed-link risk with you. Read about Jakarta airport transit for onward domestic flights before you book two tickets.

From Malaysia, the departure airport matters as well. Our KLIA vs KLIA2 guide for Indonesia flights helps you match the airport to the airline.

When should you book?

Book as soon as dates are fixed, especially around school holidays. Early booking widens timing choices and keeps your hotel nights aligned. See school holiday flight and ferry booking windows for the planning calendar.

What should you ask the agency before a flight is booked?

Put the questions in writing so both sides can check the answers.

  • What baggage allowance does this fare include, and for which aircraft?
  • Which airport and terminal does the flight use on each leg?
  • What is the change or cancellation process, and who handles it?
  • Is the connection on one ticket, and what is the buffer?
  • What time must I check in, and where?

What is the fallback if the flight moves?

Keep the first and last days flexible so one change does not collapse the trip. Ask your hotel to hold the room for a late arrival, and ask the agency what happens to transfers if the time shifts. If the leg is short, compare a ferry with the ferry vs flight planner.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is the cheapest domestic fare always the best choice?

Not always. A low fare can leave out baggage, meals or seat choice, and an inconvenient departure can cost you a hotel night. Compare the total with your bags, your timing and the cost of a change.

Should a first-timer pick a full-service airline?

A full-service fare suits travellers who want baggage and a meal bundled, and who value simple change options. A low-cost fare suits light travellers who are comfortable adding extras only when needed.

Which airport and terminal does the flight use?

Some cities have more than one airport, and some airports have more than one terminal. Ask which one your ticket uses, because it changes your transfer, your hotel choice and your check-in time.

How early should I book domestic flights?

Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially around school holidays and long weekends. Early booking gives more timing choices, and our booking-windows guide shows when prices and seats tend to tighten.

What if my domestic flight changes time?

Airlines can reschedule, so keep the first and last days of your trip flexible. Read the change terms before paying, and ask the agency who will handle the rebooking if the schedule moves.
