Domestic flight baggage and check-in: rules to check
You are packing for an island hop and want no surprises at the airport counter.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Confirm the baggage allowance, cabin rules and counter closing time for every leg before you pack. These rules change with the airline, the fare and the aircraft, so a rule that held on one flight may not hold on the next. The checks below take a few minutes and save a lot of stress at the counter.
If you are still choosing flights, read our guide to picking a domestic airline first. Then use this checklist for the details.
Which rules change with the fare, the aircraft or the airport?
The table shows where to look. Treat every row as something to confirm on your own booking rather than a fixed rule.
| Item | What can change it | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Free checked bag | Airline, fare type, aircraft | Booking page and e-ticket |
| Cabin bag size and weight | Airline and aircraft | Airline baggage page |
| Counter closing time | Airline and airport | Booking confirmation |
| Excess baggage fee | Airline, and online or counter payment | Airline fee table |
| Restricted items | Airline and security rules | Airline restricted items page |
Our guide to what happens if a flight is rescheduled covers the other rule that shifts without warning, the departure time.
What should you check before packing?
Work through this list a week before you travel.
- What is the free checked baggage allowance for each domestic leg?
- Is there a separate cabin bag limit, and does it include a laptop bag or a handbag?
- Does the allowance count by weight, by piece or both?
- What are the excess baggage charges, and can you prepay online?
- Which items are restricted, such as power banks, aerosols and liquids?
Write the answers beside your itinerary. If you hold a connecting booking, check whether the through allowance applies.
How early should you reach the airport?
Counters close before departure, and queues build for the busy morning waves. Check the counter closing time on your confirmation, then add a buffer for traffic, bag drop and security. Families with children and elders need more time at the counter, and a missed closing time can cost you the seat.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are packing for more than one flight and want the rules checked against your route, send us your itinerary and bag count. We can give the plan a second look and, with your consent, pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. What if you have more luggage than the allowance?
You have three practical choices: pack lighter, prepay extra allowance, or send a bag ahead if your agency offers it. Compare the prepaid price with the counter price on the airline’s fee table before you decide. Souvenir shopping can push you over, so leave some room for the return.
Better options when luggage is heavy: reduce what you carry by wearing the heaviest items and moving fragile gifts to the cabin bag.
Which questions should you send the agency?
Put them in writing before you book.
- What baggage allowance does each domestic leg give?
- Does the quote include any prepaid extra baggage?
- What time does the counter close at each airport?
- Who handles the matter if a bag is delayed or damaged?
What is the fallback if a bag is delayed?
Report the delay at the airport before you leave the hall and keep the claim reference. Carry one change of clothes, medicines and chargers in your cabin bag. Share the hotel’s address with the airline so the bag can follow you, and tell your agency the same day.
Keep planning
- How to choose a domestic airline in IndonesiaYou are connecting two Indonesian islands and the cheapest fare may not suit your day.
- When an Indonesian flight is rescheduled or cancelledYour connecting flight moved and a driver is already waiting at the other end.
- KLIA or KLIA2 for your Indonesia flightYou booked the cheapest fare to Bali or Medan and now wonder which terminal to head for.
- Where to stay: area guidesYou know the island, but the choice of base still decides how tired everyone feels.
- Adisutjipto or YIA: which airport do flights use?Your booking names an airport you half remember, and you want to be sure where you land.
- Airport pickup fees and hotel transfersYou land tired, and the hotel's pickup offer arrives with a price you cannot judge.
Questions Malaysians ask
What baggage can I take on an Indonesian domestic flight?
The allowance depends on the airline, the fare and the aircraft, and it can differ from your flight to Indonesia. Read the baggage line on your booking, and ask the airline or agency if anything is unclear.
Does my international allowance carry over to domestic legs?
Not necessarily. A separate domestic ticket follows its own rules, so check each leg. If one booking covers both, ask which allowance applies to the domestic part.
How early should I get to the airport?
Counters close before departure, and the closing time differs by airline and airport. Check the time on your booking, then add a buffer for traffic, bag drop and security.
What if my bag is overweight?
Excess bags are charged by weight, and paying at the counter can cost more than adding allowance online. Weigh your bag at home and add the extra before you travel, if the airline offers it.
Can I carry power banks and batteries?
Airlines set their own rules on batteries and power banks, including whether they belong in the cabin bag. Check the airline's list of restricted items before packing, and keep chargers where you can reach them.
Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
