Heat, humidity and elderly travellers
Your parents want to see everything, and you want to protect their energy in the tropical heat.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Heat and humidity are manageable for elderly travellers when the day is paced around the cooler hours, with plenty of fluids and a proper rest at mid-day. The US CDC notes that older adults are more likely to get heat illness and can become ill more quickly than healthy adults [1]. A short, quiet plan beats a full list.

Why do older travellers feel the heat more?
The CDC lists older adults, young children and people with chronic conditions as more likely to get heat illness [1]. AARP adds that older adults take more medications, which can affect how the body handles heat [4]. Humidity makes it worse, because a Bali travel guide notes that in the wet season humidity makes it feel much hotter [5].
Ask the family doctor two questions before the trip: how do my regular medicines interact with heat, and what should I do if I feel unwell? Write the answers down and carry them.
What does a well-paced day look like?
| Time | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Main outing: temple, market or garden | Cooler part of the day [2] |
| Late morning | Short stop in a cafe or museum | Shade and a seat |
| Mid-day | Hotel rest in air conditioning | Rest in the shade [2] |
| Late afternoon | Light walk or pool time | Cooler air returns |
| Evening | Early dinner, early night | Energy for tomorrow |
Keep the car close to each entrance, and ask your driver to wait with the air conditioning on. Our driver day checker helps you test whether a day’s plan suits the hours and the roads.

The CDC lists excessive thirst, heavy sweating, headache, dizziness or confusion and nausea as signs of heat exhaustion. If these appear, get out of the sun right away and cool off, then drink cool, non-alcoholic fluids [3]. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and the CDC says to seek help immediately [3].
Agree on a signal before you leave, so anyone can call a stop without fuss. Older travellers sometimes hide discomfort to avoid spoiling the day.
How do you manage fluids, clothing and sun?
Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, and wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured clothing [2]. AARP advises drinking water before and during the trip, packing electrolyte tablets and monitoring the heat index [4]. Add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Where should elderly travellers stay?
Choose a hotel with lifts or ground-floor rooms, reliable air conditioning and a short walk to meals. Our guide to where to stay in Bali with elderly parents compares areas, and the Yogyakarta pacing guide for elderly parents does the same for Java.
Check travel insurance for pre-existing conditions before you pay. Our travel insurance checklist lists the questions to ask.
Keep planning
- Sun, hydration and long sightseeing daysThe itinerary looks easy on paper, until the midday sun meets a queue of tired children.
- Where to stay in Bali with elderly parentsYour parents tire on long walks and uneven steps, and you want them comfortable as well as proud.
- Yogyakarta with elderly parents: pacing guideYour parents want to see the temples, and you want them to enjoy it rather than endure it.
- Where to stay: area guidesYou know the island, but the choice of base still decides how tired everyone feels.
- Airport pickup fees and hotel transfersYou land tired, and the hotel's pickup offer arrives with a price you cannot judge.
- Attractions and cultural places in IndonesiaYou have limited leave and a long list of temples, and you want the days to feel unhurried.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is Indonesia too hot for elderly parents?
It can suit them if the day is paced well. Plan outings for the cooler part of the day, rest in air conditioning at mid-day and keep drinks within reach. Talk to their doctor before you go, especially if they take regular medicines or have a heart or blood-pressure condition.
What are the signs that an older traveller is overheating?
The CDC lists excessive thirst, heavy sweating, headache, dizziness or confusion and nausea as heat exhaustion signs. Move them out of the sun, cool them with a fan, air conditioning or cool water, and give cool drinks. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, so call for help.
How much should we plan in a day?
Plan one main outing in the morning, a long rest in the afternoon and a light evening. Fewer stops are better than a full list. Keep the car close to each entrance and agree on a signal for when anyone needs to stop and rest.
Should my parents take electrolyte drinks?
Electrolyte tablets or powders can help, and travel guides recommend packing them. Ask their doctor first, because some medicines and health conditions affect how fluids and salts should be managed. Water between meals and fruit at breakfast also help. Your pharmacist can suggest a suitable product.
