First day, last day and buffer days: how to plan

Your flight lands late, your flight home leaves early, and the days between feel precious.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Treat the first day as a landing day, the last day as a flight-home day and add buffer days where a missed connection would hurt. On the first day, plan a transfer, a meal and an early night. On the last day, keep the morning free and stay close to the airport. These simple rules protect everything in between.

This guide is part of our regional itinerary design series.

What fits on the first day?

The first day carries a flight, immigration queues, a transfer and check-in. That is already a full day, even when the flight is short. Plan only what the group can do without effort: a meal near the hotel, a pool visit or a short walk.

For an island where arrival timing matters, see Bali arrival day plan for a late flight. Before you fly, confirm entry steps on the official Indonesian immigration site.

What should the last day look like?

The last day belongs to the airport. Pack the night before, check out early, and choose a hotel close to the airport if your flight leaves in the morning. Traffic is the risk, not the distance.

One Bali guide puts the Ubud to Uluwatu drive at about 1 hour 45 minutes in the early morning and over 3 hours in the afternoon peak [1]. A drive to the airport behaves the same way, so the same road can be calm at dawn and slow by mid-afternoon.

See Bali last day plan for a late flight home for a worked example.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If your flights land late or leave early, send us your timings and the area you plan to stay. We will check what fits on the first and last day and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

Where do buffer days go?

Position Why What it holds
Day after arrival Recovers from the flight A light day, no early start
After a long drive or flight Resets energy Pool, spa, slow meal
Before the flight home Absorbs delays A free day near the airport
Midway in a long trip Catches fatigue Anything the group wants

An operator in the multi-island trade says it allows time in each place to settle in and to reset after long journeys [2]. Your own plan can borrow the same idea.

How do you plan for a late flight or an early one?

A late flight gives you a free day, but a free day with checked-out luggage can feel long. Ask the hotel for late check-out or luggage storage, and plan a quiet meal and a short walk. An early flight pulls everything forward: pack the night before, skip the evening outing and order a driver in advance.

If the return leg starts at Lake Toba, Toba to Medan return timing for an evening flight shows how to add margin. In Medan itself, Medan city day before a flight shows what fits.

How do you test the plan?

Count the hours on the first and last day, from wheels down to hotel, and from hotel to boarding. Use the driver day checker to see whether the plan leaves a margin, and ask the agency where it has put buffer time on the itinerary.

For halal meals on travel days, request a meal-by-meal list and look for the Indonesian halal logo at airports and rest stops.

Questions Malaysians ask

What should we plan on the arrival day?

Plan a transfer, check-in, a meal and an early night. If the flight lands before lunch, add a short walk near the hotel. Leave the main sights for day two, when everyone has slept and the driver knows your pace.

How early should we leave for the flight home?

Ask your driver and the airline for current guidance, and leave extra time for traffic. If you are travelling from a far area, plan the last night near the airport. A late-afternoon peak can stretch a drive, so do not schedule sights on the morning you fly.

What is a buffer day and do we need one?

A buffer day is an empty day that absorbs delays. Put it before a long-haul return or before a key booking. In a trip of a week or more, one buffer day reduces the stress of a missed flight or bad weather.
