Best time to visit Lombok and the Gilis

You want calm beaches and clear water, so you need the weeks when boats and weather cooperate.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

For Lombok and the Gili Islands, the dry months from roughly April to September give the clearest weather and the calmest water. They are also the busiest, so the trade-off is crowds and early booking against rain and rougher seas. The right month depends on your leave, your group and how much flexibility you have.

Use this guide to match season to plan. For other islands, start at the season, activity and traveller fit hub.

When are the dry and wet seasons in Lombok?

One travel guide puts Lombok’s dry season at roughly April to September and the wet season from late October or November to April, with November to January the wettest [1]. Sources differ by a month at each end, so treat the edges as a range rather than a switch.

Dry months suit beaches, waterfalls and road trips. Wet months bring afternoon showers, greener scenery and softer prices.

What changes for the Gili Islands?

The same guide recommends June to September for the best snorkelling visibility on Gili Air, and notes these are also the busiest months [3]. Because the Gilis sit across open water, sea conditions can move boat times, so a flexible arrival day helps.

Our guide on Gili day trip versus overnight helps you decide how much time to commit, and the Gili Islands page covers the three islands. If you are coming from Bali, read about the fast boat from Padangbai.

Is Mount Rinjani trekking seasonal?

Yes. The same guide reports that Mount Rinjani National Park closes from 1 January to 31 March because of unpredictable wet-season weather [2]. Dates can change, so ask the guide company for current rules.

Rinjani is a demanding trek that suits fit adults. Read what to check before adding a volcano excursion before you commit.

Which month suits which traveller?

Traveller Better window Why
Snorkellers and divers June to September Better water visibility
Families with young children Dry months, with a flexible boat day Calmer seas and easier beach days
Budget-minded couples Wetter months Softer rates, fewer crowds
Trekkers Outside the closure window Park open, paths drier

Our guide to Lombok and Gili with young children adds practical checks for boat days and shade.

What should you confirm before fixing dates?

Ask your driver or agency four things:

  1. Which boat operator and port will we use, and what is the weather fallback?
  2. How early must we arrive for a morning crossing?
  3. What is the plan if rough seas delay the boat?
  4. Is any trek or park access closed on our dates?

Next, choose between the dry peak and a shoulder month, write the boat day into your plan as a flexible day, and send us the dates.

Questions Malaysians ask

When is the best time for the Gili Islands?

The drier months suit outdoor plans, and clearer water favours snorkelling. Those months are also the busiest, so book boats and rooms early. Shoulder months can give calmer beaches with a little more weather risk. Confirm boat schedules with your agency.

Can I visit Lombok in the rainy season?

Yes, if you accept showers, rougher seas on some days and the chance of a changed boat time. Keep plans flexible, choose a hotel with indoor space and check the sea forecast the day before any crossing. Rates tend to be lower.

Is Mount Rinjani open all year?

A travel guide reports a closure from January to March, but dates can change. Treks demand fitness and early starts, which is hard for young children and older relatives. Confirm current rules with the guide company and the park before planning around it.

Is one week enough for Lombok and the Gilis?

A week lets you split time between the mainland and one Gili, with a buffer for a boat delay. Add travel days when flying from Malaysia, since routes may connect through Bali. Avoid packing a mountain trek and a boat day back to back.
