Nasi campur: what is on the plate
A glass case of unfamiliar dishes is in front of you and the queue is moving.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Nasi campur means “mixed rice”: a plate of steamed rice with small portions of side dishes such as meat, vegetables, egg and sambal [1]. Malaysians know the idea from home. In Indonesia the useful skill is knowing what sits on the plate before it reaches your table.
What do you get on a nasi campur plate?
Rice goes in the middle, then a few spoonfuls of whatever the stall cooked that day. Fried tempeh, tofu, egg, a vegetable dish, shredded chicken and a spoon of sambal are all familiar companions. There is no fixed recipe, so two stalls can serve two quite different plates.
In a warung (small local eatery), you point at the dishes in the glass case and the cook assembles your plate. In Java a similar plate is also sold as nasi rames.
How does Bali change the plate?
Bali’s version is built on base genep, a spice blend [3]. Plates can carry lawar (a salad of vegetables and coconut), sate lilit (minced meat satay) and ayam betutu (spiced chicken). Because Bali has a Hindu majority, the plate may also include pork dishes such as babi guling, while a version with ayam betutu, sate lilit and egg exists too [2].
Lawar needs a closer look, since it can contain minced meat or pork blood [3]. Our babi guling explainer shows what that dish looks like on a stall sign.

Ask the stall to name each item before it goes on the plate. Check whether pork, lard or pork blood is in the lawar, the sambal or the fried items, and whether the cooking oil is shared. A busy stall tells you how popular it is, not how the kitchen handles pork.
Look for the halal label from BPJPH, Indonesia’s halal agency, and read the BPJPH explainer to see what that label means. Rely on the label and the cook’s own answers rather than the look of the stall.
Where does it fit on your trip?
Nasi campur suits a quick lunch between sights, when you want a small taste of a few dishes. Bali plates change from stall to stall, so ask each time. Our food and daily travel hub gathers the wider food questions, and the Muslim-friendly region guide compares destinations by meal access.

Questions Malaysians ask
Is nasi campur the same as nasi campur in Malaysia?
The idea matches: rice with a spread of side dishes. The sides differ by region, and in Bali a plate may carry lawar, sate lilit or pork dishes. Ask what each item is before it lands on your plate, even if the name looks familiar.
Is nasi campur in Bali halal?
It depends on the stall. A Balinese plate may include pork dishes, though a version with ayam betutu, sate lilit and egg also exists. Ask the cook to name each item, check for the BPJPH halal label, and ask your agency for a meal-by-meal list.
What is nasi rames?
Nasi rames is the Javanese name for a similar plate of rice with assorted side dishes. You will meet it in Yogyakarta and other Java towns. Order it the same way: point to the dishes you want and ask what each one contains.
