Babi guling: Bali's roast suckling pig

You keep seeing the name on Bali signs and want to know what it means.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Babi guling is Bali’s signature dish of spit-roasted suckling pig, stuffed with local herbs and spices and cooked over an open fire [1]. It is a pork dish. Muslim travellers should know the name on sight, and pork-eating Malaysians can use this page to order well.

Where does babi guling come from?

The dish began in ceremony. It was traditionally prepared for temple anniversaries, tooth-filing rites, weddings and births, then shared with family and community [2]. Today it is also sold at everyday warung (small local eateries) and restaurants across the island.

Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud is one of the best-known names [4]. Our Ubud page places it among the town’s other stops.

What is on a babi guling plate?

A plate can include crispy skin, roast pork, lawar (a vegetable and coconut mix), minced pork sate lilit and sometimes sausage, with a broth on the side [3]. Menus offer it either piled on rice (biasa) or served separately (pisah) [3]. Look for those two words on a menu board.

What should Muslim travellers know?

Babi means pork, so a sign with “babi” tells you the stall serves it. The Bali Hindu island guide explains what changes for Muslim travellers between regions.

A mixed warung that sells babi guling may handle pork in the same kitchen as other dishes, so ask before ordering anything there. For meals you can plan, look for the BPJPH halal label and read the BPJPH explainer. The halal food stay guide shows which areas make this easier.

How do you order it well?

If pork suits your group, go for a late-morning lunch, when the kitchen is busy and the plate is fresh. Ask your driver to pick a stall with a steady queue. You can also try a smaller taste inside a nasi campur plate, where it appears as one of the sides.
