A ten-day, three-region Indonesia trip: the shape

You have one long stretch of leave and three places on the wish list.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A ten-day Indonesia trip across Sumatra, Java and Bali works when you treat it as three short stays joined by two flights, not ten days of sightseeing. Three nights, three nights and four nights is a sensible shape. Each flight takes part of a day, so every region gets less time than the map suggests.

This guide belongs to our regional itinerary design series. If you are still deciding which regions to pick, start with the islands explained guide.

What does the night split look like?

Region Nights What it gives you Where the long day falls
Medan and Lake Toba Three Lake views, Batak culture, a city food evening The road from Medan to the lake
Yogyakarta Three Temples, craft and Javanese food The sunrise temple day
Bali Four Beach, rice terraces, rest The day trips from your base

Put the heaviest travel first. You arrive with energy, and the final days leave room for the pool.

How long do the flights between regions take?

Trip.com lists a Lion Air nonstop from Medan to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) taking about 2 hours 50 minutes, though schedules and frequency vary by day [1]. Because the schedule can change, check the airline before you build the trip around one departure.

From Yogyakarta to Bali, Gecko Routes lists a direct flight of about 1 hour 30 minutes with Garuda Indonesia and Super Air Jet [2]. Remember to add airport time on both sides, which turns a short flight into a half-day.

Why does the order matter?

Medan and Lake Toba carry the longest road day, so they suit the start of the trip. Yogyakarta sits in the middle as a cultural stop with short transfers between sights. Bali closes the trip because rest is easy there and the flight home to Malaysia is short.

For the Sumatra leg alone, see Medan and Lake Toba without unnecessary backtracking. For the last two regions, the Yogyakarta then Bali logistics guide covers the handover.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you have ten days and three places on the list, send us your dates and who is travelling. We will look at the route with you and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

What should you cut first?

Cut in this order if the plan feels tight:

  1. The extra day trip in the region you like least.
  2. The sunrise start, because it costs sleep and the next day.
  3. A third hotel inside any one region.

Keep the rest days. A trip with three regions needs more slow hours than a trip with one.

What should you check before you book?

  • Flight times and baggage allowance for each domestic leg.
  • Whether the agency lists driver days and transfer days separately.
  • Meal arrangements for each region, with a meal-by-meal list if you need halal food. Look for the Indonesian halal logo where it matters.
  • Visa and arrival declaration steps, which you should confirm on the official Indonesian immigration portal before you fly.

The region chooser helps you test whether all three regions belong in this trip, and the ferry versus flight planner compares the legs between them.

Is a two-region version better?

For a first visit, two regions can feel richer than three because the nights are not cut into small pieces. If you hesitate, compare Bali, Jogja or Medan for a first trip and decide which pair gives your family the best fit. A good ten days can still be two regions with a longer stay in each.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is ten days enough for Sumatra, Java and Bali?

It is enough for a first taste if you accept a little from each region. Two flights join the three places, and every flight costs part of a day. Choose three nights, three nights and four nights, and leave out the extras.

Which region should come first?

Start with the region that asks for the highest energy, which for a first-timer is Medan and Lake Toba because of the long road to the lake. End on Bali, where rest is easy and the flight home is short. This order also keeps the beach for the end.

Do I need a private driver in all three regions?

A driver is worth the cost where public transport is thin, such as the road from Medan to Lake Toba and the temple circuit around Yogyakarta. In Bali traffic is the issue, so a driver for the day trips is worth pricing. Ask the agency which days include one.
