Mount Sibayak and Sinabung: what to check
You like the idea of a volcano hike near Berastagi and want to know what suits your group.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Mount Sibayak is the volcano most visitors consider for a Berastagi hike, while Mount Sinabung is an active volcano best seen from a distance. Check the alert status before you plan anything. A viewpoint day is a very good alternative when the group includes parents or young children.
The whole question is effort and conditions, so this page helps you decide quickly. For other stops in the area, see our Berastagi market, Gundaling and Lingga village guide.
Why does Sinabung’s status matter?
Sinabung has been active for years, and the volcano agency can change its level at short notice. On 31 August 2026 PVMBG raised it to Level III (Alert) after an eruption, and activity was barred within a 3 km radius of the summit [1].
Check the current level before you plan around it. If the status is raised, enjoy the mountain as a backdrop and spend the day elsewhere.

Spend the morning at Gundaling hill and the Berastagi market, then go on to the lake. Nobody misses out, and the day stays relaxed.
A short soak in a hillside hot spring is another gentle option if your driver confirms access. Our Medan to Toba with a Berastagi loop guide shows how to build it into the route.
What should you prepare for a Sibayak hike?
Start early, because cloud and rain build by midday. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and a light jacket, and plan a guide who knows the trail.
Consider medical and evacuation cover too, as hiking carries more risk than city touring. Our travel insurance checklist lists what to ask.
What is a good plan on the day?
Ask your driver for the current volcano status and trail report before you leave the hotel. Set a turn-around time, and agree that anyone can stop at a viewpoint.
If the weather turns, switch to the market and Gundaling. You can read the area overview in our Berastagi overnight guide.

Questions Malaysians ask
Can tourists climb Mount Sinabung?
Sinabung is an active volcano with exclusion zones around the summit, so it is not a routine hike. Treat it as a mountain to view from a distance. Check the latest PVMBG status and local advice before planning any approach.
Is Mount Sibayak suitable for beginners?
Sibayak is the more approachable of the two and is a common first volcano walk near Berastagi. It still needs sturdy shoes, a morning start and a reasonable fitness level. Ask your driver to confirm trail conditions and the current volcano status.
Is the Sibayak hike suitable for older parents?
The full hike is demanding for grandparents. A good alternative is to enjoy views of the volcanoes from Gundaling hill or a viewpoint near Berastagi. Hot-spring and hillside stops give a gentler feel of the highlands.
Where do I check volcano status?
Use PVMBG, Indonesia's volcanology agency, and local disaster office announcements, and ask your driver on the morning itself. Status changes without warning in some seasons, so keep your plan flexible and have a viewpoint alternative ready.
