Lagoi or Tanjung Pinang: which Bintan side?

You have chosen Bintan and now need to pick between a resort bubble and a working town.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Pick Lagoi if you want a resort break with pools, beach time and few decisions. Pick Tanjung Pinang if you enjoy a working town with local food and heritage, and do not mind a simpler stay. Short Malaysian breaks do well with one base, and for a first trip Lagoi is the easier choice.

For broader context, see the regions and destination choices hub and our Bintan guide. Then use this page to settle the side.

What is the real difference between the two sides?

They are two different kinds of trip on one island. The northern resort area is built around hotels, beaches and planned activities, and the Bintan Resorts area covers about 23,000 hectares [4]. That scale lets a resort stay run without leaving the grounds.

Tanjung Pinang is the capital of the Riau Islands province, in the south of Bintan, and the island’s main town, a port and trade centre [2]. It feels like a place people live and work in, not a holiday enclave.

How do the two compare side by side?

The table uses the same assumptions for both: a Malaysian party of adults and school-age children on a short ferry-based trip.

Question Lagoi side (north) Tanjung Pinang side (south)
Ferry terminal Bandar Bentan Telani Sri Bintan Pura
Style of stay Resort, pool, beach Town hotel, local streets
Pace Slow, planned Local, flexible
Food Resort dining, set meals Local eateries and markets
Heritage Little on site Old town and nearby Penyengat
Best suited to Families, couples, short breaks Food and heritage seekers
Worth knowing Self-contained, fewer local streets A town, not a resort enclave

Our Lagoi resort area guide and Tanjung Pinang profile go deeper on each side.

How do the ferry terminals shape the choice?

Ferries run from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bandar Bentan Telani in the northern resort area and to Sri Bintan Pura at Tanjung Pinang [1]. Tanjung Pinang also has ferry and speedboat links to Batam, Singapore and Johor Bahru [5].

The island’s airport handles domestic flights only, and Singapore is roughly an hour from the Bintan Resort area by ferry [6]. In practice you cross by sea, so your terminal choice decides your first and last hour.

Who should choose Lagoi?

Choose Lagoi if you travel with young children, grandparents or a group that wants one booking and few moving parts. Couples who want a quiet beach and spa time also fit.

It is best suited to short breaks of two or three nights. The cost is less contact with local life, so a resort stay gives you the beach but less of the town.

Who should choose Tanjung Pinang?

Choose Tanjung Pinang if you enjoy local food, markets and history, and you travel with older children or adults who like walking. It also suits travellers who prefer a simpler hotel and spending time outside it.

The old town and the nearby island of Penyengat give the south its character. Penyengat is a small historical island about 6 km offshore, with the Masjid Raya Sultan Riau mosque [3]. It was a centre of the Riau-Johor sultanate in the 19th century [3]. Our Penyengat day guide shows how to fit it in.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are choosing between a resort and a town for your Bintan break, send us your dates and who is travelling. We will recommend a side and can pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

Can you combine both sides?

Yes, a longer trip can add a second base for a heritage day. The road between the two sides takes real time, so ask your driver for the current drive and agree a pickup plan.

Our road transfer guide lists the questions. For a short trip, one base saves a day of transfers, and a day trip from one side to the other is enough.

What about Muslim travellers?

Both sides can work, but halal availability depends on the venue. Ask your resort or agency for a meal-by-meal list, look for the BPJPH halal logo and confirm kitchen practices. Tanjung Pinang’s local eateries need checking one by one.

Ask where the nearest prayer space is on each side and plan it around your outings.

What if three generations are travelling together?

Match the side to the slowest traveller, and let everyone else adapt. A grandparent who tires quickly will enjoy a resort with shade, seating and a quiet room far more than a town walk in the heat.

If the group wants both, base in Lagoi and add a single guided day to Tanjung Pinang with a long lunch and a rest stop. Ask your driver to keep the car close, so no one walks far with luggage or small children.

Before you travel, agree who handles passports, ferry tickets and the first-night check-in, so the arrival does not fall on one person.

How do you decide in five minutes?

Answer three questions: who is your slowest traveller, what length of stay do you have, and do you want a resort day or a town day?

  • If your slowest traveller is a toddler or grandparent, choose Lagoi.
  • If you have only two nights, choose Lagoi.
  • If you want local food and history, choose Tanjung Pinang or add it as a day trip.

Match the answers to your ferry terminal before you book, since the terminal sets your first and last hour.

What should you confirm before you pay?

  • The ferry terminal and sailing time for your side
  • Who meets you at the terminal and how you reach the hotel
  • Meal arrangements and how halal needs are met
  • What happens if weather delays the ferry
  • Whether a day trip to the other side is included

Tell us who is travelling and for how long, and we will recommend a side and check the transfers with you.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which is better for a family, Lagoi or Tanjung Pinang?

Lagoi suits families who want pools, beach time and a hotel that handles meals and activities. Tanjung Pinang suits families who enjoy local streets and heritage with older children. For toddlers and grandparents, the resort side removes the heaviest logistics. Match the side to your slowest traveller.

Can I stay in both Lagoi and Tanjung Pinang?

Yes, with a plan. The island is large enough that a road transfer between the two takes real time, so confirm the current drive with your driver. A short trip works better with one base, while a longer trip can add a second base for a heritage day.

Which ferry terminal serves each side?

Bandar Bentan Telani serves the northern resort area, and Sri Bintan Pura serves Tanjung Pinang. Both connect to Singapore, and Tanjung Pinang also has links to Batam and Johor Bahru. Choose your terminal after you choose your side. Write the terminal name on your booking notes before travel day.

Is Tanjung Pinang halal-friendly for Malaysians?

As a local town it has options for Muslim travellers, but availability depends on the venue. Ask for a meal-by-meal list, look for the BPJPH halal logo and confirm kitchen practices. Ask your hotel for local eateries it already recommends to guests.

Is Lagoi worth it if I only have a weekend?

Yes, a weekend in Lagoi works well because the resort area is self-contained and the ferry lands close to it. You spend your time at the beach and pool, not in transfers. Add a night if your ferry arrives late.
