How our drive-time ranges are built

You are planning a Bali day and wonder why we show a range instead of one number.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

We show drive times as a range because the same Bali road can take a short time at dawn and much longer on a busy afternoon. The low end is the quick case, the high end is the slow case, and your plan should leave room between the two. A single number would look neat but mislead you.

This page explains what goes into the ranges and how to use them. It is written for Malaysians sharing a car with family or friends, where one late leg can push dinner very late.

What goes into a range?

We build a range from a few plain inputs rather than from a single measurement.

  • The route between two named areas, not two map pins.
  • The kind of road, such as a main road, a narrow lane or a coastal route.
  • Time of day, since morning and late afternoon differ.
  • Known slow points, such as market streets and event days.

We then state the range in plain time bands and say what tends to move it. Where we cannot support a figure from a source, we describe the pattern in words and ask you to confirm with your driver.

Why does distance on a map mislead?

Kilometres and minutes do not move together in Bali. A short stretch through a town can take longer than a long run on an open road. Our guide on reading road times in Indonesia goes deeper on this.

Traffic changes by area as well as by hour. See Bali traffic by time of day and area for the pattern behind the ranges.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If a range makes your day look tight, send us your hotel area and stops. We can look at the order with you and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

How do I use a range to plan?

Treat the range as two answers to two questions.

Your situation Plan around Why
Flight or ferry to catch The slow end, plus a buffer A miss costs more
Fixed booking such as a show The slow end The time is not flexible
Relaxed sightseeing day The middle You can absorb a delay
Travelling with young children or elders The slow end Rest stops add time

Then set the pick-up time backwards from your deadline. Check the full day with the Bali drive-time table, and test the hours the day needs with the driver day checker.

What should you ask your driver?

The range is a starting point. Your driver knows the day.

  1. How long is this leg at the hour we will travel?
  2. Is there an event or ceremony on our route that day?
  3. Where would you place a rest stop on this leg?
  4. What is the latest we can leave and still arrive on time?

What is the next step?

Take the slow end of the range for any leg with a deadline, add a buffer you are comfortable with and share the plan with your driver the evening before. If the day still looks full, read how to check whether your Bali day is overpacked.

Questions Malaysians ask

Why do you show a range and not one time?

Bali road time swings with the hour, the day and events. A single figure sounds precise but fails on a busy afternoon. A range tells you the quick case and the slow case so you can plan a buffer.

Are the ranges promises of arrival time?

No, they are planning guides. They help you decide how much a day can hold and when to leave. Your driver can tell you the live picture on the morning itself.

Which end of the range should I plan around?

For a fixed deadline such as a flight or a ferry, plan around the slow end and add a buffer. For a relaxed sightseeing day, the middle of the range is a fair guide.

Where can I see the ranges?

They sit in our Bali drive-time table, where each area pair is shown as a range with notes on what slows the road.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
