Best time for Batam and Bintan

You have a long weekend from Johor and want to know when the weather and ferries behave.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

For a short break, the best time for Batam and Bintan is the drier stretch from about March to October. The wet monsoon months from November to February still allow a weekend, if you keep plans flexible. A short trip has little room for lost days, so the season matters more than on a longer holiday.

Use this guide to match your weekend to the weather and the ferry. For other islands, start at the season, activity and traveller fit hub.

When is the dry and wet season in the Riau Islands?

Indonesia’s tourism site says Bintan’s weather is best from about March to October, and that November to February, the north-monsoon months, brings bigger waves on the east coast [1]. A Southeast Asia monsoon guide describes the Riau Islands, which include Batam and Bintan, as wettest from November to February with around 23 rainy days a month [2]. It adds that some rain falls throughout the year.

So even in the best months, a shower is possible. Pack a light rain layer in every season.

What does a wet weekend change?

On a short break the main risks are a delayed ferry, a rained-out beach day and a rushed return. Resort pools, spas and malls still work, but outdoor tours may be cancelled.

Season Beach and resort days Ferry and transfers
March to October More reliable Normal, still confirm the day before
November to February Showery, bigger east-coast waves Allow spare time on arrival and return

How do you plan the ferry day?

Ferry sailings depend on sea conditions, and operators adjust them day by day. Check the schedule with the company or agency before you go, and avoid a tight same-evening commitment on your return. The Batam ferry arrival and resort transfer guide explains the steps.

If you travel with children, aim for a mid-morning arrival rather than a late one, so a delay does not cost the first evening.

What can you do on a rainy day?

Batam suits showery days with its malls, massage and indoor stops. Read Batam malls and indoor options for a rainy hour for ideas. Bintan resorts keep pools, spas and kids’ clubs running, so ask which indoor activities your resort offers before you book.

Our Bintan three-day resort plan includes a flexible day.

Which month should you choose?

Choose March to October for beach-led weekends. Choose November to February only if you want a spa-and-mall break or lower rates, and accept a flexible ferry day.

Questions Malaysians ask

When is the best time for a Bintan weekend?

The tourism board points to about March to October for the best weather. A short break fits well in those months because beach and resort days are more reliable. Book early for school holidays, and keep an indoor option in case a shower arrives.

Is Batam or Bintan bad in the monsoon?

It is wetter and breezier from November to February, with bigger east-coast waves. Resort pools, spas and malls still work, so a short stay can go ahead. Keep your ferry day flexible and confirm sailings the day before. Pack a light rain jacket and plan a spa day as a backup.

Do ferries run during rough weather?

Operators decide day by day based on sea conditions, so schedules can change. Check with your ferry company or agency before you travel, and build a spare hour into the arrival and the return. A Sunday return before a work day needs extra care.

Is Batam better than Bintan when it rains?

Batam has malls, massage and indoor attractions close to the ferry terminals, which suits showery days. Bintan's draw is beaches and resorts, which shine in dry weather. Choose by what your group would do if the sun does not appear.
