Ubud or southern Bali for four days

You have a short leave window and cannot afford to lose half of it in the car.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

For four days, one base is almost always calmer than two. Southern Bali saves the most road time. Ubud gives the strongest sense of place but costs a longer drive on the days you arrive and leave.

If you are still comparing areas, see the accommodation areas hub. This page compares only these two choices for a short trip.

How much road time does each base cost?

Ubud is about 38 km from the airport, and the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours [1]. Seminyak, in the south, is about 10 km away and takes 30 to 45 minutes [2]. Nusa Dua is 12 to 15 km away, though the drive can take 30 to 60 minutes at busy times [3].

On a four-day trip, you travel both ways, so Ubud adds two long drives to a short stay. Ask your driver for current times, and see the Bali drive-time table for more pairs.

How do the two bases compare for four days?

Question Ubud Southern Bali
Arrival day Long drive after landing Short drive, quick check-in
Beach time A drive away Close to the hotel
Culture and rice terraces At the doorstep Day trip needed
Dining and spas Good, quieter evenings Wide choice, livelier evenings
Fit for a late flight Harder Easier
Best suited to Culture and quiet days Beach, easy logistics, mixed groups

Who should pick Ubud?

Ubud suits couples and culture-minded travellers who want the island’s green interior and are happy to spend less time at the beach. It works well when your flights land in the morning and leave in the afternoon.

Better options when time is tight: choose the south and add one day in Ubud. Our Ubud page helps you decide between the centre and the terrace outskirts.

Who should pick the south?

Southern Bali suits families, groups of friends and travellers with a late arrival or early departure. Seminyak offers dining and beaches within reach, and calmer areas such as Sanur and Nusa Dua suit small children and grandparents.

Evening traffic around the busier beaches is slow, so book dinner close to the hotel.

What does a four-day plan look like?

A single southern base works with one beach day, one culture day by driver, one flexible day and one travel day. A single Ubud base works with one terrace and temple day, one workshop or spa day, one day out to the coast and one travel day.

If you do split, give each base two nights and keep the move day free. Our four-day itinerary guide shows what realistically fits.

What should you do next?

Write down your arrival and departure times, then count the road hours each base adds. Use the first-timer stay guide to pick the exact area once you have chosen a side.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is four days enough for Ubud and the south?

It fits both only if you accept a rushed pace. A single base lets you enjoy the days. If you split, give each base two nights and keep sightseeing light on the move day.

Which base saves more time on arrival?

Southern Bali, because the airport is close to the southern beaches. Ubud adds a longer drive on arrival and departure days, which matters when your flight lands late or leaves early.

Can I see Ubud while staying in the south?

Yes, as a day trip with a private driver. Expect a long day of driving, so keep other plans light and plan dinner near the hotel.

What if my group wants beaches and culture?

Stay in the south and add one Ubud day, or stay in Ubud and add one beach day. A single base with one day trip is calmer than changing hotels in a short trip.
