Grab and Gojek in Indonesia explained

You know Grab from home and keep hearing about a second app in Indonesia.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Grab and Gojek are the two ride-hailing apps used across Indonesia for cars and scooter taxis. Grab operates across Southeast Asia, so Malaysians already know it, while Gojek operates only in Indonesia [1]. Installing both gives you a second price to compare on every trip.

How do Malaysians meet them on the trip?

Mainly for short hops: hotel to restaurant, beach to cafe, airport to base. Both apps offer a car, and a scooter taxi called an ojek. Fares are fixed and shown before you book, but tolls and parking are paid to the driver, around IDR (Indonesian rupiah) 20,000 [2].

Keep small notes ready if you pay cash, and link a card in the app if you want fewer awkward moments.

Where can pickups go wrong?

Some places are no-pickup zones. Local taxi drivers in some areas have banned app pickups, and Padangbai Port, Sanur Port, Echo Beach in Canggu and Pandawa Beach in Uluwatu are named examples [3]. Drop-offs still work, so the trouble is leaving.

At the airport, a Grab Lounge and a Gojek Lounge outside arrivals help you order a car, but airport prices are higher [4]. Our pickup restrictions guide lists workarounds.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you are unsure whether an app or a private driver fits your Bali days, send us your base area and group size. We can suggest a mix and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

What should you set up before you fly?

Open Grab at home and check that your account and payment still work, because registration is tied to an Indonesian or Southeast Asian SIM card [5]. Install Gojek too, and add your hotel address as a saved place.

Send screenshots of your bookings to a travel companion so someone else can see the route.

When does a private driver fit better?

Apps suit simple point-to-point trips. A full day with a string of stops, grandparents or a boat connection is calmer with a driver who waits. Compare the two in our private driver vs Grab all-day guide, and read the wider Grab and Gojek guide for Malaysians.

Taxis are a third option, covered in Bluebird and metered taxis vs ride-hailing. See our Bali guide for base areas where apps work well.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can I use my Malaysian Grab account in Indonesia?

One Bali guide says Grab registration needs an Indonesian or Southeast Asian SIM card, and Malaysia is in Southeast Asia. Settings can change, so open the app before you fly, check the booking screen and install Gojek as a backup. Link a card rather than relying on cash and small notes.

Are scooter taxis a good idea with children?

Scooter taxis are quick and cheap, but riders need a helmet and one Bali guide prefers cars because road accidents are common. Families do better with a car or an agency driver. Keep scooter rides for adults travelling light, and ask the rider for a spare helmet.

Why will my driver not pick me up at the port?

Local taxi drivers in some spots have banned app pickups, though drop-offs still work. Padangbai and Sanur ports, Echo Beach in Canggu and Pandawa Beach in Uluwatu are named examples. Walk a few hundred metres away, or arrange the pickup in advance through your hotel or driver.
