Grab and Gojek pickups in Bali: workarounds

Your app shows a driver nearby, yet the pin keeps moving and the car never reaches your door.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

In some parts of Bali, app pickups can be limited, and the rules are not the same everywhere. Expect to meet your car at a nearby road rather than your door in busy spots, and keep a backup. For arrival day and late nights, a pre-booked car is the calmer option.

This page is a dated, practical guide. Rules change, so treat it as a starting point and check the app and your hotel.

What is behind the pickup problem?

Reports describe tension between app drivers and local taxi groups in tourist areas. A February 2025 article says some hotspots had local taxi arrangements that kept online taxis out, and it relays local drivers’ complaints about pickup points [1]. The same article expects the standard system to reduce these limits, though it advises visitors to check current rules.

As a visitor you do not need to take sides. You only need a plan for when the car does not arrive.

How do you handle the airport?

Arrival is the moment pressure peaks, because you are tired and may have luggage.

  1. Follow the airport signs to the transport area before you open the app.
  2. Check which pin the app offers, and wait for the driver to confirm.
  3. Keep the official taxi counter as your fallback.
  4. For a late arrival, see late-night arrivals at Bali airport.

What works at the hotel and on busy streets?

Message your driver as soon as the booking is accepted. Share a landmark, such as a gate, a shop or a main road corner.

If the driver cancels, do not argue. Try these in order:

What if the driver waits somewhere else?

This happens when a driver stops at the edge of a zone and cannot enter. It is not a sign that something is wrong with your booking.

Stay calm, and call or message the driver through the app. Ask exactly where the car is, then walk there with your bags if the distance is short. If you travel with a child or an elder, ask the driver to wait while you take a slower route, or cancel and ask the hotel for a car instead.

Tell your hotel in advance that you plan to use an app. Front desk staff know which lane works best in their street and can point you there.

Which choice fits which trip?

Situation Calmer choice
Arrival day with luggage Pre-booked transfer
Short hop between cafes App, with a backup
Late night Hotel-arranged car or official taxi
Full sightseeing day Private driver
Quiet lane or village Walk to a main road

If you are choosing between the app and a driver for a whole day, private driver vs Grab all day lays out the trade-offs. For the basics of the apps, read Grab and Gojek in Indonesia for Malaysians.

What should you check yourself?

Check the app on landing, ask your hotel what works that day, and confirm any pre-booked meeting point. Keep the driver’s number and the plate in your notes. For general Bali planning, open the Bali guide.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can I use Grab or Gojek at Bali airport?

Pickup rules at the airport have been a topic of dispute, and the arrangement can change. On arrival, follow the airport signs to the designated transport area, and check the app for the pin it offers. The official taxi counter is the simplest fallback if the app does not match.

Why does my driver cancel near my hotel?

A driver may be unsure about a local arrangement near some hotels or streets. Message the driver with a clear landmark, or walk to a main road and set the pin there. If it keeps failing, ask the hotel to arrange a car.

Are these restrictions official rules?

Reports describe a mix of formal policy and local arrangements, and sources can disagree. Treat any single article as a dated snapshot. Check the app, ask your hotel what works that day, and keep a backup option ready.

What is the easiest way around these issues?

A pre-booked driver removes the pickup question entirely, since the car meets you at a fixed point. This helps on arrival day, late nights and days with children or elders. Ask the agency to confirm the meeting point in writing.
